Norbert C. Reinert, 72, spent a lifetime helping others

Norbert C. Reinert had no questions about his purpose on earth. He was put here to help people, he used to say. And that's what he did.

Mr. Reinert shared his mechanical talents with his neighbors, his church and his community in Melbourne.

Mr. Reinert, 72, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.

He was diagnosed earlier this year with Lou Gehrig's Disease, which stole his strength and rendered his hands useless. It was a devastating loss for a man who had spent a lifetime extending those hands to others, said his daughter, Connie Kroger of Melbourne.

Mr. Reinert had been a truck driver for R.J. Beischel Construction in Cincinnati for 41 years. He had a garage workshop at home, where he would fashion tools and mechanical devices.

"He could think up a piece of equipment and make it work," his daughter said. "He could build anything. He built a cannon. He dug his own wells."

People came to him when machinery broke down or when they needed a tractor fixed, said his wife, Ramona. It wasn't unusual for neighbors to show up in the family driveway with items to be welded.

"He'd drop whatever he was doing and help," Mrs. Kroger said.

"He taught me patience and integrity. He believed in hard work and helping others," she said. "He could handle any situation."

He and his first wife, Joann Reinert, raised two daughters and a son. Shortly after he retired in 1989, Joann Reinert was diagnosed with cancer and died 14 months later.

Two years ago he married a longtime family friend who had been widowed. He and his new wife, Ramona, traveled to Florida. It was Mr. Reinert's first vacation trip.

"He was a wonderful father, husband and friend," Ramona Reinert said.

Mr. Reinert was a volunteer firefighter and was a member of the Grandpas Club at St. Philip's Church in Melbourne - a group of retired men who maintained the church and school buildings and grounds. Mr. Reinert helped weld the iron fence that the group made and installed around the church grounds.

He was a member of Laborers Union Local 265 and the Campbell County Historical Society.
