Sarah Terrell, maintained keen sense of family's history

Sarah Margaret Riggs Terrell, a gentle woman with a fierce pride in her pioneer forebears, died Saturday at Lafayette Nursing Home in Fayetteville, Ga., where she had moved a month ago from her home in Florence.

Mrs. Terrell was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Women's Club and Dorcas Circle at Erlanger United Methodist Church. She also had been a volunteer with the Sewing Circle and at Colonial Heights in Florence.

Her ancestor, Mary Riggs, traveled to Northern Kentucky on a flatboat. Riggs Road in Erlanger was named for her grandfather, who owned a farm where the road now runs.

"My mother always felt a keen sense of where she came from and what it took to settle this country," said her son, Donald Terrell of Jonesboro, Ga.

Mrs. Terrell and her husband, Wesley G. Terrell, instilled a sense of family history and community history in their son and grandchildren.

"My grandmother ws bright and witty," said granddaughter, Diana Terrell McGuffie, of Madison, Miss. "She had a wonderful sense of humor and a sense of history."

She and her husband used to take road trips in their travel trailer, stopping at historic sites. Donald Terrell remembers his parents taking him camping in the then newly opened Smoky Mountain National Park in the 1930s.
