Matilda Felice, nurse for 30 years
As a nurse whose career spanned more than 30 years, Matilda Felice helped deliver hundreds of babies in Kentucky.
Mrs. Felice began her career in 1930 but took several years off to raise her own family. She returned to nursing after her children left the nest and thus began a long tenure of helping the public.
"Mom was loved by everyone and didn't want to retire," said a son, Felici Felice of Mays Lick.
"All of these people would come up and talk to her. It would be 20 to 25 years later and they would ask her, 'Do you remember me'? She either delivered them or someone close to them."
Mrs. Felice, 86, of Mays Lick, died Tuesday at Pioneer Trace Nursing Home in Flemingsburg.
She was a retired nurse with Mount Mary Hospital and Appalachian Regional Hospital, both in Hazard.
Mrs. Felice was born in Whitley County, outside Corbin. She encouraged her children to go to school and resumed her career after her son Felici went off to college.
Mrs. Felice worked on the night shift, made home visits and was available for emergencies, her son said.
A soft-spoken woman, Mrs. Felice often "double-backed to take care of people," her son said. "She was a friend to everyone."
Her husband, Sam Felice, and a son, Frank Felice, preceded her in death.
