Edith Himes, devoted to church, family
Edith Dixon Himes loved people.
"She enjoyed being with them, she enjoyed talking to them," said her only son, William Himes of Wilder.
The retired office clerk at Gibson Greeting Cards in Cincinnati, liked to tell people about how she helped out in the general store her father ran in Lewis County.
Mrs. Himes of Newport, formerly of Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at the Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. She was 98.
Mrs. Himes was born in Lewis County in 1901 and moved to Northern Kentucky 55 years ago, her son said.
She was very active in the Asbury United Methodist Church in Highland Heights, where she was a member of various committees, her son said. And she was a 50-year member of Gertrude Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, which is affiliated with the Masonic Order.
Mrs. Himes was very proud of her two great-grandsons, who are in college, Himes said.
Other survivors include a brother, Leonard Dixon of Portsmouth, Ohio and one granddaughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Asbury United Methodist Church, Highland Heights. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 tonight at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Asbury United Methodist Church, 2916 Alexandria Pike, Highland Heights, Ky., 41076.
John A. Bacon, 84, of Newport, died at 10:25 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired furniture salesman with Shillito's department stores.
Survivors include sisters, Lenora Bacon of Fort Thomas and Myrtle Bacon of Newport; a niece and two nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to St. Therese School Fund, 2516 Alexandria Pike, Southgate, Ky. 41071. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.
Gus F. Bierman, 83, of Alexandria, died at 7 a.m. Wednesday at his home. He was a retired dry cleaner with Munster Cleaners in Bellevue, and a member of Main Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Super Seniors of Alexandria and the Bellevue Retirees.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Marie Bierman; a stepson, Edward Scott of Sarasota, Fla., a daughter, Beverly Schappell of Loveland, Ohio; stepdaughters, Joyce Butsch of Alexandria, Cathy Price of Florence and Cynthia Tischner of Melbourne; two grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Main Street Baptist Church Book of Remembrance, 306 W. Main St., Alexandria, Ky. 41001.
Joseph Forest Burk, 78, of Sanders, died Tuesday at Gallatin County Health Care Center, Warsaw, after a long illness. He was a self-employed farmer and a member of Drury Chapel Methodist Church, Warsaw.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Stewart Burk; daughters, Ruth Middleton of Warsaw, Deborah Brown of Ghent, Dorothy Perkins of Union and Alice Burk of Louisville; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery. Nelson Cheeks, 67, of Crittenden, died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at his home. He was a factory worker with American Sign Co. and a farmer, and a member of Lively Stone Church of God, Sherman.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Long Cheeks; sons, Wayne Cheeks of Walton, Dale Cheeks, Bobby Cheeks and Mike Cheeks, all of Crittenden; daughters, Wanda Golden of Crittenden, Pat Rarick and Debbie Bube, both of Walton; his mother, Lida Cheeks of Paris; brothers, Shelby Cheeks of Williamstown, Jay Cheeks of Dry Ridge and Harold Cheeks of Crittenden; sisters, Frances Davis, Gean Kelly and Joyce Cain, all of Richmond, Evelyn Rutherford of Florence, Lucille Berry of Paris, Jewell Conner of Paint Lick and Mildred DeMony of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 20 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services were this morning at Lively Stone Church of God. Burial was in Independence Cemetery. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence, handled arrangements.
Patsy Kay Fryman, 49, of Maysville, died at 8:20 p.m. Monday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a homemaker.
Her husband, Frankie C. Fry man, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Dallis C. Fryman of Maysville; daughters, Opal Dugan and June Mers, both of Maysville; brothers, Cecil Powell of Maysville and Milton Powell of Aberdeen, Ohio; a sister, Joyce Powell of Maysville; several half-brothers and half-sisters, and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery.
Loraine A. Glass, 75, of Independence, died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Homer J. Glass, died July 24.
Survivors include sons, Robert Glass, Jeffrey Glass and Daniel Glass, all of Independence; daughters, Becky Casullo of Independence and Mary Ellen Stoffel of Houston; a brother, Joseph Duddey of Dry Ridge; a sister, Ruth Duddey of Covington; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mother of God cemetery Chapel, Fort Wright. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery. Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.
Jennie L. Held, 87, of Latonia, died at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Washington Care Center, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia. Her husband, Harry J. Held, died in 1974.
Survivors include a son, Robert C. Held Sr. of Alexandria; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Ronald Helton, 61, of Dry Ridge, died at 3:24 a.m. today at Grant Manor Health Care Center in Williamstown.

Rosemary Kelly, 79, of Latonia, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Joshua Paul Langsdale, 53, of Stelle, Ill., formerly of Covington, died Sunday at his home. He was a former computer programmer.
Survivors include wife, Kamisha Langsdale; a son, Isaac Langsdale of Stelle; brothers, Fred Langsdale of Burlington, Bill Langsdale of Erlanger and Robert Langsdale of Springboro, Ohio.
Memorial services will be Jan. 8 in Stelle.
Daniel Noble Jr., 66, of Hebron, died at 11:34 a.m. Tuesday at Mercy Hospital, Fairfield, Ohio.
He was a retired secretary and treasurer of Teamsters Union Local No. 105 and a member of Hebron Baptist Church. He was a retired master sergeant in the Air Force, a member of Ralph Fulton VFW Post No. 6423 in Elsmere, Good Faith Masonic Lodge No. 95, the Scottish Rite and Syrian Shrine.
Survivors include his wife, Kathern Spencer Noble; sons, Hurley Dean Noble of Wilmington, Ohio, David Alan Noble of Bromley and Benjamin Lee Noble of Hebron; sisters, Clustina Welluk and Armanda Fugate, both of Enon, Ohio, and Imogene Myer of Springfield, Ohio; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hebron Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m.
Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.

Vera Pauline Pate, 70, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker. A daughter, Laura Mara, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, George Joseph Pate; daughters, Shelia Bright of Rushville, Ill., and Beth Bright of Keystone Heights, Fla.; sons, Tommy Pate of Falmouth, John Hall of Beardstown, Ill., Richard Hall of Washington, D.C., and Erik Pate of Bradford, Ark.; and a sister, Ellen Gust of Versailles, Ill.

Curtis Pratt, 83, of Williamstown, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood, after an extended illness. He was a retired coal miner with Carrs Fork Coal Co. in Eastern Kentucky, a member of Lystra Church of Christ in Williamstown and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Brown Pratt; daughters, Carolyn Godbey and Marilyn Marshall, both of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery. Audrey Cleo Sipple, 78, of Wharton, W.Va., formerly of Erlanger, died Monday at Boone Memorial Hospital in Wharton. She attended Erlanger Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Elam of Wharton; a sister, Edna Groger of Hebron; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Douglas A. Weber, 75, of Dayton, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

William E. "Bud" Wells, 70, of Woodlawn, died Tuesday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired chief of detectives with the Newport Police Department, the former owner of Newport TV Service and a real estate investor. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. His wife, Ruth Richardson Wells, died in 1994.
Survivors include a son, William L. Wells of Newport; daughters, Michell Morris and Jennifer Wilke, both of Newport; a sister, Bonnie Voss of Covington; brothers, Larry Wells of Highland Heights and Paul "Leroy" Wells of Florence; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
