Cecelia Walter, collected Madonna statues
Cecelia Vonderheide Walter made her family proud.
Mrs. Walter was a Covington native who was an excellent student, said her sister, Elizabeth Kuebbing of Fort Mitchell. "She was a very smart girl. She was always the top in her class," said her sister. "She was a wonderful lady."
Mrs. Walter enjoyed reading and collecting small statues of the Virgin Mary.
"She had a beautiful collection of Madonnas from all around the world and gave talks on the subject," said her sister.
And she believed in helping others, Mrs. Kuebbing said.
"Cecelia was an active lady and joined many organizations and took a leadership role in every one of them," she said. Among the groups she enjoyed were the Book Lovers Club of Xavier University and Franciscan Terrace Guild.
Mrs. Walter, 91, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center in Fort Wright. She was an executive secretary and office manager with Sebastian Lathe Co. in Covington. Her husband, Charles Walter, died in 1995.
Other survivors include sons, Raymond Walter and Lawrence Walter; a daughter, Shirley Wheeler; a sister, Mary Heinen; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Schmidt-Dhonau Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Graveside services will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to St. Charles Care Center, 500 Farrell Drive, Fort Wright, Ky. 41011; or Sisters of Notre Dame, 1601 Dixie Highway, Park Hills, Ky. 41011.
Clara R. Elmer, 75, of Alexandria, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Paul E. Elmer; daughters, Paula Brown and Rosemary Heiss, both of Alexandria; a brother, Donald Rehg of Highland Heights; sisters, Janet Gillingham of Bryson City, N.C., Edna Sudduth of Ontario, Canada, and Gladys Reuscher Reed; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Bessie Lee White Gibbs, 74, of Dover, died Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Worthington Chapel, Minerva. She served as a financial secretary and communion steward with the church, and was a former member of the Willing Workers Club.
Survivors include her husband, Elmer "Jack" Gibbs Jr.; brothers, William White, Everett White and Stanley White, all of Maysville; and sisters, Violet Jackson and Addie Porter, both of Maysville, Irene Thompson, Fannie Oliver, Hattie Bell Humphrey and Mary F. Brown, all of Dayton, Ohio.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Minerva Methodist Church. Visitation will begin there at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Green Acres Cemetery, Maysville.
Floyd Hemphill, 70, of Highland Heights, died Wednesday at Hospice of Blue Ash, Cincinnati. He was a retired employee of the Equitable Bag Co. and an Army veteran. His wife, Rose L. Hemphill, died earlier this year. A son, Michael Hemphill, died in 1978.
Survivors include daughters, Brenda J. Hauschildt of Maineville, Ohio, and Betty A. Rehg of Alexandria; brothers, Estill Hemphill of Winter Haven, Fla., Charles Hemphill of Detroit, Joe Hemphill of Belleville, Mich., and Rufus Hemphill of Gray; sisters, Cleda Robinson of Highland Heights, Marie Smith of Moore, Okla., and Florine Hensley of Hamilton, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hampton Funeral Home, Barbourville. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Alexandria Funeral Home, and from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at Hampton Funeral Home. Burial will be in Shy Mug Cemetery, Bimble.

Robert E. Hewitt, 67, of Latonia, died at 6:55 p.m. Tuesday at his home. He was a retired branch manager of the First National Bank in Cincinnati, a volunteer with the Parish Kitchen in Covington and a kitchen manager with Holy Cross Elementary School in Latonia. He was a Navy veteran. There are no immediate survivors.
Services will be at the convenience of his friends. Mr. Hewitt bequeathed his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Catchen Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Warren G. Reynolds, 78, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at Village Care Center in Erlanger.
Arrangements are pending at Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington.
Rachel Willoughby Smith, 32, of Fruitland Park, Fla., formerly of Alexandria, died Wednesday at her mother's home in Fruitland Park. She was a homemaker and delivered the Orlando Sentinel newspaper for several years.
Survivors include her husband, Ted Smith; sons, Wesley Smith and Ross Smith, both at home; daughters, Merissa Smith and Autumn Smith, both at home; her mother, Norma Jean Willoughby of Fruitland Park, Fla.; brothers, David Willoughby of Newport, Tim Willoughby and Cliff Willoughby, both of Fruitland Park; and a sister, Sharon Kay Hanlon of Alexandria.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lone Oak Cemetery, Leesburg, Fla. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Beyers Funeral Home, Lady Lake, Fla.
Mentor Watkins, 54, of Cincinnati, died Monday at his home.
