Pauline Hay Norris, owned Midway bar
Pauline Hay Norris, a sheriff's deputy in Campbell County in the 1960s, died at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at the home of her daughter in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., She was 88.
Mrs. Norris and her husband, Jack, owned the Midway bar and restaurant in Fort Thomas in the 1940s, and she was active in the Democratic Women's Club in Northern Kentucky.
"She was a very strong-willed person and a very kind person," said her son, Melvin Norris of Southgate.
"She believed that your word was more important than any paper you signed," he said.
She and Jack Norris reared four children. As a young mother, she and other mothers started the lunchroom program at Cold Spring Elementary school, going into the school to prepare lunches for the children.
In the early 1940s, the Norrises bought Midway Bar and restaurant, across from the military base in Fort Thomas. Mel Norris remembers his mother sending him to the guards on duty with a jug of hot coffee and sandwiches.
"She was always looking out for people," he said. "We had an efficiency apartment that she would open up to the soldiers when their wives were in town."
The Norris household became a second home for the young soldiers.
The family sold the bar in the late 1940s and moved briefly to Florida.
When they returned, Jack Norris worked in the machine tool business. Mrs. Norris worked in the office for the Beverly Hills Supper Club and later became a sheriff's deputy under George Ratterman and Bud Conners.
Her son recalled the time she escorted a woman convicted of murdering her husband to a state prison hospital. "My mother felt sorry for her, and she would go to visit her," Mr. Norris said.
Jack Norris died in 1970 and Mrs. Norris moved to Florida to be near her daughter.
"Her kids were her whole life. Anytime we needed her, we could always turn to her," her son said.
Mrs. Norris also had been a member of Eastern Star and was a former member of Asbury United Methodist Church.
A son, Joe E. Norris, died in 1998.
Survivors include daughters, Nancy Withrow of LeHigh Acres, Fla., and Jacqueline Hardin of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a brother, Melvin Hay of Indianapolis; 15 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Burial will be at Evergreen cemetery in Southgate at a time to be determined.

Dorothy Mae Schnelle Devoto, 77, of Fort Thomas, died at 12:16 a.m. Wednesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Paul J. Devoto, died in 1968.
Survivors include daughters, Diane Carr of Cincinnati and Susan Keating of Alexandria; sons, Gary Devoto of Highland Heights, Paul Devoto of Fort Thomas and Joseph Devoto of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Marie Schwartz of Cincinnati; a brother, Norb Schnelle of Fort Thomas; and 10 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Baptist Convalescent Center, 120 Main St., Newport, Ky. 41071.
Mark Andrew Engle, 27, of Elsmere, died Wednesday at his home. He was an employee of Ed Scott Construction Co. and a member of Kenton Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Andrew Daryl Engle of Crittenden; brothers, Michael Engle of Bedford, Joe Engle of Corinth and Jeffrey Engle of Dayton; and sisters, Michelle Martin of Florence, Janet Engle of Falmouth and Glenda Garcia of Raleigh, N.C.

Mary M. Steenken Hanneken, 88, of Covington, died Wednesday at St. Charles Care Center, Fort Wright. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. Her husband, Louise Hanneken, died in 1980.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Charles Care Center Chapel. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. James M. Hart, 83, of Florence, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Gary Hinkle, 42, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Wednesday in Tucson of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident.

Paul "Bud" Jackson Jr., 68, of Walton, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a truck driver with Serta Mattress Co. and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 719, Walton.
Survivors include his wife, Eunice Baker Jackson; a daughter, Sharon Jackson of Walton; sons, Paul Jackson Jr. of Verona, Danny Jackson of Union and Terry Jackson of Berea; sisters, Florence Bishop of Covington, Margaret Cammack and Norma Meriss, both of New Liberty; a brother, James William Jackson of New Liberty; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton, with Masonic services at 11:45 a.m. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to charity.
Thomas E. Jansen, 87, of Butler, died at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a mechanic, co-owner of Al-Tom Cycle Co., Covington, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Wachs Jansen; and a sister, Pauline Eilers of Covington.

Lucille Lanham, 82, of Bellevue, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a fruit packer with Liberty Cherry Co., Covington. A son, Terry Sullivan, died in 1970.
Survivors include a daughter, Connie Lanigan of Covington; sons, Gary Sullivan and Harold Sullivan, both of Newport, Jimmy Sullivan of Highland Heights; sisters, Oleda Edward of Latonia and Catherine Kenner of Wildwood, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
Alexander "Bus" Lucas, 72, of Augusta, died Wednesday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. He was a retired employee of Clopay Corp., a member of Augusta VFW Post No. 9535 and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Minnie L. Lucas, died in 1987. A son, Mike Lucas, died in 1979.
Survivors include a daughter, Becky Bailey of Maysville; sons, Gary Lucas of Augusta, Randy Lucas of Brooksville, Greg Lucas of North Carolina and Jeff Lucas of Newport; a sister, Betty McElfresh of Maysville; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Geraldine Price, 69, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

Warren G. Reynolds, 78, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at Village Care Center in Erlanger. He was a mail handler with Union Terminal in Cincinnati for 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Reynolds; a son, Warren T. Reynolds of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.

Martha E. Schroder, 80, of Erlanger, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She retired as a secretary with Cincinnati Gas & Electric after 31 years and was a member of Mother of God Church Choral Club and Bereavement Committee. She was also a longtime volunteer with Catholic Social Services.
Survivors include a sister, Mary E. Schroder of Erlanger.

Mentor Winford "Winky" Watkins, 54, of Cincinnati, formerly of Bromley, died Monday at his home. He was a former truck driver with RAM Motor Freight Co. in Cincinnati and an Army veteran.
Survivors include a daughter, Tara Watkins Hensley of Elsmere; a son, Ray Watkins of El Paso, Texas; brothers, Gordon Watkins of Cincinnati, David Watkins of Florence, Clarence Watkins of Christmas, Fla., and Claude Watkins of Middletown, Ohio; sisters, Janice Gray of Georgetown and Vedia Watkins of Ludlow; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Betty Wright, 81, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
