Optometrist Pieper "quite a lot of fun"
Dr. Elmer John Pieper, an optometrist from Fort Wright, was still practicing at 80, seeing one or two patients a day.
"They wanted to see him," said his niece and goddaughter, Pauline E. Hardiman of Boynton Beach, Fla. "He really knew his stuff when it came to eyes."
Dr. Pieper, 84, died at 3:20 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was also a member of Mother of God Church, Covington; Covington Optimist Club; Kentucky Optometric Association; and American Optometric Association. His wife, Blanche Smoak Pieper, died in 1992.
Dr. Pieper was an avid golfer. He also loved to swim and bowl. He enjoyed traveling.
Most people called Dr. Pieper "Moe," Mrs. Hardiman said.
"He had such a great sense of humor," Mrs. Hardiman said. "He was quite a lot of fun to be around."
Other survivors include a sister, Clara Brown of Kansas City, Mo.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Monday at Mother of God Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Entombment will be in St. Mary cemetery Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Memorials: to charity of donor's choice.
Alene Morris Baker, 87, of Fort Thomas, died Friday at Carmel Manor nursing home in Fort Thomas. She was a retired sales clerk for McAlpin's and a member of Florence Baptist Church.
Her husband, Kimber Morris, died in 1980, and a daughter, Emogene Beers, died in 1979. Survivors include a stepson, Buck Morris of Nicholasville; sisters, Emma Benjey of Corbin and Olga Luebbe of Fort Wright; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence, with visitation 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.
Sylvia Belser, 82, of Taylor Mill, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Anthony Church, Taylor Mill.
Survivors include her husband, Irvin Belser; sons, Robert Belser of Morning View and Irvin Belser Jr. of Latonia; daughters, Sandra Brock and Jacquelyn Albers of Florence and Marcia Steffen and Milissa Smith of Alexandria; a sister, Edna Tazar of San Jose, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Monday at St. Anthony Church, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 10 to 11:45 a.m. Monday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Catherine Mae Burkhart, 53, of Cynthiana, died Friday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Curtis Burkhart; a son, Curtis Burkhart Jr. of Cynthiana; a daughter, Cathie Spurlock of Cynthiana; stepsons, Omar Burkhart and Curtis Owen Burkhart of Clay County and Ricky James Burkhart of Owsley County; a stepdaughter, Nora Marie Campbell of Clay County; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana, with visitation at 9 a.m. and burial in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Harrison County.
Willie Rose Dunn, 61, of Owenton, died Thursday at her home. She was a homemaker.
Her husband, Donald Dunn, preceded her in death. Survivors include daughters, Glenna Stivers and Debbie Sutton of Louisville Nancy Wagoner of Cynthiana and Patricia Broughton of Pleasureville; sons, Gene Taylor of Georgetown and Wayne Dunn and Charles Dunn of Owenton; a brother, Lonnie Switzer of Georgetown; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rogers Funeral Home, Owenton, with visitation after 5 tonight. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery, Owen County.
Mark Andrew Engle, 27, of Elsmere, died Wednesday at his home. He was an employee of Ed Scott Construction Co. and a member of Kenton Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Andrew Daryl Engle of Crittenden; his mother, Maybelle Deatherage Engle of Demossville; brothers, Michael Engle of Bedford, Joe Engle of Corinth and Jeffrey Engle of Dayton; and sisters, Michelle Martin of Florence, Janet Engle of Falmouth, Glenda Garcia of Raleigh, N.C.

William J. Hahnel Sr., 70, of Erlanger, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was a retired president of Cincinnati Schroeder Co.; an Army veteran of the Korean War; a member of St. Henry Church Holy Name Society, Elsmere, Catholic Order of Foresters and Knights of Columbus Father Beiler Council; and on the board of St. Henry Credit Union and Architectural Hardware Consultants.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Pharo Hahnel; daughters, Diane Redmon of Ohio and Sharon Richardson of Independence; sons, Bob Hahnel of Erlanger and Bill Hahnel Jr. of Independence; nine grandchildren and one step grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. James M. Hart, 83, of Florence, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was the retired owner and president of the former Hart's Coffee Co., Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park, and Hebron Masonic Lodge No. 757. He was a volunteer at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and for Dinsmore House in Burlington.
His wife, Nell Lancaster Hart, died in 1991. Survivors include a daughter, Ellen H. Davis of Petersburg, Va.; a son, Jay L. Hart of Westport, Conn.; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park, with visitation from 10 a.m. and a reception after the services. His body was donated to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

M. Dolores Adkison Hines, 65, of Fort Thomas, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She worked for Cincinnati Bell and was a sales representative for Avon Cosmetics.
Survivors include her husband, Clifford G. Hines; a daughter, Lisa Neltner of Wilder; sons, George Schierer Jr. and David G. Hines of Fort Thomas; a brother, Ronald Adkison of Euless, Texas; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Mary Lou Hopper, 57, of Florence, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
Survivors include brothers, Paul David Hopper of Jacksonville, Fla., Tom Hopper of Burlington and Ralph Hopper of Elsmere; and sisters, Linda Hughes of Covington, Laura Speaks, Diana Moses and Patricia Moore of Florence and Peggy Jung of Cincinnati.

Patricia Ann Hauger Karnes, 61, of Dayton, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of 55 Club at St. Bernard Church, Dayton.
Survivors include her husband, Gordon B. Karnes; a daughter, Natalie Powell of Cold Spring; sons, Dennis Karnes and Randy Karnes of Dayton, James Karnes of Baltimore and David Karnes of Cold Spring; her mother, Virginia Hauger of Dayton; brothers, Tom Hauger of Seattle and Tim Hauger of Park Hills; a sister, Charlene Bankemper of Fort Thomas; and seven grandchildren.

Darlean Faul Mofford, 39, of Brooksville, died Thursday from injuries in an auto accident Thursday on Ky. 8 in Campbell County. She was a lab support technician at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas, and a member of St. James Church, Brooksville.
Survivors include her husband, Edgar Mofford; sons, Raymond Mofford and Daniel Mofford of Brooksville; a daughter, Stefanie Mofford of Brooksville; her father, Robert Faul of Brooksville; her mother and stepfather, Janie Groves Fathergill and Johnny Fathergill of Melbourne; brothers, Roy Lee Faul of Brooksville and Donnie Faul of Foster; a sister, Bonnie Reckers of Brooksville; a half-sister, Connie Fathergill of Melbourne; half-brothers, Mark Fathergill, Mike Fathergill and Dale Fathergill of Melbourne.

Stephen David Morrison, 47, of Florence, died Thursday at his home. He was a machinist for R.A. Jones Co., Florence.

Ronald C. Powell, 63, of Burlington, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a self-employed home builder. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Powell; a daughter, Rhonda Hermanek of Burlington; sons, Kurt Powell and Walt Powell of Florence; sisters, Lois Clay and Sharlene Lamb of Youngstown, Ohio; brothers, Bob Powell and Rick Powell of Youngstown, Ohio; and five grandchildren.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington, with a reception there from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Service, Cincinnati.
Geraldine Hoffman Price, 69, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was a retired assembly line worker for Safegard Corp., Covington.
Her husband, Junior Price, died in 1989. Survivors include a brother, Harry Hoffman of Wyoming, Ohio; and sisters, Theda Greatorex and Louise Holthinrichs, both of Cincinnati, and Elsie Decker of Forest Park, Ohio.

Cecil H. Smith, 68, of Cherry Grove, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died Friday at his home. He formerly owned Smith Seasons Cleaners, Covington.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret A. "Margie" Wolf Smith; stepsons, A. Stephen Long of Williamsburg, Ohio, and Jeffrey C. William H. Wildeboer Sr., 77, of Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights.
He was a retired sheet-metal worker for Peck-Hannaford & Briggs Inc., Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of World War II.
A daughter, Cheryl Jean Gilbert, died in 1998. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Stegner Wildeboer; sons, Greg Wildeboer, Michael Wildeboer and Richard Wildeboer of Alexandria, William Wildeboer Jr. of Woodlawn, Donald Wildeboer of Taylor Mill and Dennis Wildeboer of Newport; 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Betty Sutherland Wright, 81, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
She was a retired cashier for Prophet Food Co. and worked in the cafeteria at General Motors, Norwood, Ohio. She was a member of Highland Avenue Wesleyan Church, Covington, where she taught Sunday school, and was active with the Kentucky and Ohio Wesleyan Church Conferences.
Her husband, Rev. Hansel D. Wright, died in 1994. Survivors include sons, Julius A. Wright of Hamilton, Ohio, and Robert T. Wright of Fort Wright; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
