Yvette McKenzie, Boone deputy court clerk
Yvette McKenzie waited more than two months for a kidney transplant, wearing a beeper on her side that would alert her when an organ was ready. Meanwhile, she went to work every day in Boone County District Court, where she and her daughter, Stephanie, both worked.
Mrs. McKenzie, a deputy clerk for a year, never complained, said Pat Gutzeit, district court clerk.
"She never complained. Ever," Mrs. Gutzeit said. "She was always just positive and upbeat - just the kind of person you'd want to be."
Mrs. McKenzie's beeper went off Nov.1, she got a new kidney, and went home Saturday. But on Tuesday, Mrs. McKenzie, 55, of Burlington, died at St. Luke Hospital West.
A native of Puerto Rico, she often translated in court for people who spoke Spanish, the only employee who could do so.
"She was just so valuable to the court system," Mrs. Gutzeit said. "We're really going to miss her."
Mrs. McKenzie and her husband, Tom, were married
25 years. She worked several jobs in the eight years they lived in Burlington, he said, but she really found something she liked working at the courthouse.
Mr. McKenzie said his wife could always cheer somebody up. "She had a way of doing that," he said. "She was just kind of the life of the party."
Other survivors include a son, Thomas L. McKenzie of Burlington; and a sister, Esther Sullivan of Fairfax, Va.
