Angelo Bonavita, 95, opened Italian restaurant and grocery
In Italian, 'bonavita" means "the good life."
For Angelo Bonavita, it was a fitting name, his daughter said.
"He loved life and he lived it to the fullest," said daughter Fay Miller.
In 1921 Mr. Bonavita came to America from the tiny village of Fuscaldo in Italy. He was 17, spoke no English and knew only his uncles in Cincinnati.
After teaching himself the language, he opened a small grocery store called Nettuno on Court Street in Cincinnati.
He later opened a restaurant, Mama Francesca, where only one meal was served a day, and patrons lingered for four to five hours, like in Italy, Mrs. Miller said.
"You had your meal like you were in his home," she said. "He never liked to rush."
Mr. Bonavita, 95, died Thursday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home in Fort Thomas, where he had lived for 13 years.
Mr. Bonavita, who became an American citizen in 1926, helped many people from his village immigrate to the United States, then helped them learn English and get jobs.
"I don't think he ever said no to anybody who asked for help," Mrs. Miller said.
He also taught Italian at the Berlitz Foreign language school and Villa Madonna College, which is now Thomas More College.
Mr. Bonavita moved to Newport after marrying his wife, Catherine, who was from there. They were married
57 years before Mrs. Bonavita died of cancer in 1983.
Mrs. Miller said he was a wonderful father and "nonno" - the Italian word for grandfather.
