Sister Mary Jeaneen, nun, teacher
The oldest of four children, Sister Mary Jeaneen, formerly Freda Marie Holtz, made sure she and her siblings remained close throughout their lives.
"She had a tremendous devotion to her family," said Sister Mary Rita Geoppinger, a friend.
When their parents died of tuberculosis, all four children were sent to St. Aloysius orphanage in Cincinnati, run by the sisters of Notre Dame Convent. Sister Mary Jeaneen worked as a secretary for the orphanage after graduating so that she could be with her brothers and her sister. She stayed there until she entered the convent. Sister Mary Jeaneen taught business at Notre Dame Academy for 38 years and, earlier, at Brossart High School and Carroll High School in Dayton, Ohio. After retiring from teaching in 1991, she started the alumni development office, where she planned to continue working this year.
"Her primary objective was just to keep in touch," Sister Geoppinger said. "She was just a real inspiration to everyone."
