David Swecker, helped make Edgewood run
The term "civic-minded citizen" very much fit David B. Swecker.
From serving on the auxiliary police force to helping with the physical work of building a park, Mr. Swecker was involved in the Edgewood community.
Mr. Swecker, 68, of Edgewood, died Saturday in St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He retired six years ago as an electrician with St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
"He was very much interested in our community," said Mr. Swecker's wife, Norma Abbott Swecker.
Edgewood Mayor John Link recalled Mr. Swecker's involvement with the city's recreation program, dating back to the 1970s. "I remember him being with me at Freedom Park cooking hot dogs when we were fighting annexation," said Link.
Lou Noll, former Edgewood mayor and city administrator, said Mr. Swecker helped with the public works committee and more recently was on the Edgewood Board of Appeals.
Aug. 29, 1999, was declared David Swecker Day in Edgewood, to call attention to Mr. Swecker's commitment to the city.
Her husband's involvement ranged from putting a new roof on a building at Freedom Park to grading ball fields, said Mrs. Swecker. "If there was a parade or an election he was always active," she said.
Mr. Swecker also was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
Other survivors include a son, Brad Swecker of Villa Hills; a daughter, Diana Mayleben of Edgewood; and three grandchildren.

Nelson E. Boyd Sr., doctor for 51 years in Independence
Dr. Nelson E. Boyd Sr. was a family practitioner in every sense of the word.
"He delivered babies and set broken bones. He made house calls, and sometimes went out when the snow was knee deep," said Dr. Boyd's wife, Virginia Kruse Hampton Boyd.
Dr. Boyd, 91, of Independence, died Saturday at his home.
He had a family medical practice in Independence for 51 years and remarked upon retiring in November 1989 that his retirement day was the saddest day of his life.
"He loved being a doctor. That was his life," said Mrs. Boyd.
Dr. Boyd became a doctor in 1938 and interned at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. After his internship, he practiced in Williamstown for a year and then in Freedlandville, Ind., before joining the Army Air Corps during World War II.
During the war he served in the China-Burma-India theater and flew over "the Hump," the military's term for the treacherous Himalaya Mountains, his wife said.
After the war, Dr. Boyd returned to Northern Kentucky and opened his practice in his home on McMilian Drive in Independence. Later he moved the office next door, recalled longtime Independence resident Randall Wagner. "He had a lot of friends out here. At times he was the only doctor in town," Wagner said.
In his later years Dr. Boyd enjoyed traveling at random throughout Kentucky, Mrs. Boyd said. "We would get out to the 3L Highway and he'd tell me to turn right. Then we'd drive wherever the road took us, to the Red River Gorge and even to Tennessee a few times," she said.
Mrs. Boyd, who is a baby-sitter, said her husband took great delight in interacting with the small children, teaching them to shake hands and the like.
A daughter, Julie Boyd, died in 1978. A stepson, Adam Hampton, died in 1977.

Boyd Jr. and Archie Boyd, both of Independence; daughters, Dorothy Dixon of Crescent Springs, Mary Styles of Paducah and Melissa Turner of Independence; a stepson, Alan Charles Hampton of Independence; sisters, Mary E.
