Ira David Hewling, school bus driver
Ira David Hewling had a quiet way of inspiring his family and friends.
Rather than speak about his love for children or helping others, he quietly performed his tasks to the best of his ability without seeking acclaim.
Mr. Hewling, a bus driver for the last eight years for the Covington Board of Education, always ensured that his students were safe, said his mother, Helen Miller of Taylor Mill.
"He was very gentle and kind. He loved children," Mrs. Miller said. "He was really interested in school bus driving and he watched out for the children."
Mr. Hewling, 57, of Taylor Mill, died Wednesday at his residence.
Mrs. Miller moved in with her son earlier this year.
Mr. Hewling's father died years ago and he always watched out for Mrs. Miller, who is now 88.
"I was really very proud of him. He was a good son and a good family man," Mrs. Miller said.
Mr. Hewling was also a former employee of the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport firefighters; a former salesman at Robke Chevrolet; and a former meat cutter for various area stores.
He served as an assistant chief and squad member for the Taylor Mill Volunteer Fire Department for eight years and was a former part-time policeman.
He was a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corp. and was a member of St. Anthony's Parish in Taylor Mill.
Other survivors include his wife, Anne D. Penn Hewling of Taylor Mill; a son, Robert Hewling of Independence; two daughters, Shari Stoeckel of Taylor Mill and Cindy Hewling of Taylor Mill; a sister, Judy DeZarn of Las Vegas, Nev., and two grandchildren.
