Genevieve McClure, teacher

Learning meant a lot to Genevieve K. McClure, and her thirst for education continued throughout her long life.

"She was always learning, always looking for knowledge. If she encountered a word she didn't know, she looked up the meaning in the dictionary," said Mrs. McClure's daughter, Mary Anne Schurter of Fort Thomas.

"Every kid we knew, she bought them a Webster's College Dictionary when they graduated from high school," said Mrs. Schurter.

Mrs. McClure, 92, of Fort Thomas, died Saturday in Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights.

A native of Springfield, Ill., and a graduate of the University of Illinois, Mrs. McClure came to Northern Kentucky with her husband, William, who was a teacher and coach. "She grew up in a very English family in flat Springfield, Ill., but she loved Kentucky," said Mrs. Schurter.

Her mother also had affection for the Ohio River, which she could see from her home, and of the University of Cincinnati, where she obtained a master's degree, Mrs. Schurter said. Mrs. McClure was also a big fan of Highlands High School's athletic teams, and was a regular at games for many years.

Mrs. McClure taught at Dayton High School in the late 1930s - English, as her daughter recalled, and then in the Ludlow schools. From the early 1950s until her retirement in 1971 she taught the first grade at Cold Spring Elementary School, Mrs. Schurter said.

"She majored in Latin and English, but she really loved the little children," said Mrs. Schurter.

Mrs. McClure was always very close to her neighbors, and she was also very fond of dogs, said her daughter. "She always had a dog, and a garden. As late as three years ago she was growing broccoli in her garden, because her dog liked it," said Mrs. Schurter.

Her mother helped look after a retarded child, Mrs. Schurter said. "She was very devoted to anything she was involved with," said Mrs. Schurter.

Mrs. McClure was a former member of First Presbyterian Church of Dayton, and a member of Dayton Presbyterian Community Guild. Her husband, William E. McClure, preceded her in death.
