Obituary of Mr. J.W. Garrett, "The Kinmundy Express" (Aug. 2, 1934)
James William Garrett, eldest son of Thomas and Catherine Garrett, was born at the old Garrett homestead, eight miles northwest of Kinmundy, September 28, 1860. It was his lot in life to early become acquainted with sorrow and esponsibility. When he was twelve years old, his father passed away, leaving to his care his mother, three sisters and two brothers. In the space of a few years following, he helped to lay to rest his sisters, Paradine and Allie, his brother, Henry, and his mother. One sister, Talitha Garrett Jones, survived until October 1897 and one brother, Theodore, remained, passing to the Great Beyond in September, 1925.
Near and dear were the ties between the two brothers and their families as for three score years they shared with each other their joys and sorrows.
He was married
to Ella Lansford, at her home on February 10, 1887, by the Rev. John Ballance. To this union were born five sons: Selby, Berthol, Frank, Clyde, and Harold, who died in early childhood;
three daughters, Hazel Livesay, Esta Robb, and Mamie Bassett. After the passing of his sister, Talitha, her orphaned children shared in his fatherly love and interest. He was converted at North Fork Church in 1891 under the preaching of the Rev. Douthitt and united with the church of his fathers, the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, at North Fork. It was a great pleasure to him to be in the place of worship and his home was a home for the ministers as they came and went. Having once given his heart to God, there was no thought of turning aside from the straight and narrow way, and his life was one of blessing to all who knew him. During his last illness he gave testimony of Christ's presence with him and died as he had lived, triumphant in the hope of Life Eternal.
After six weeks of patient suffering, he entered into rest, Saturday morning, July 28, 1934, at the old homestead where all seventy-four years of his life had been spent except for some five months spent in Colorado.
He leaves to mourn their loss his wife and seven children, twenty-two grandchildren, six nieces and one nephew, and a host of other relatives and friends. Two little granddaughters, Clara and Isabel Garrett, were waiting at the Heavenly Portals to welcome him. The funeral services were held from the home Sunday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. Story, officiating. Interment was made in Sandy Branch Cemetery.

MABEL GARRETT, 86, DIES
Mabel Gertrude Garrett, 86, of Salem, passed away at 12:10 a.m., July 11, 1990, at Salem Hospital.
She was born January 6, 1904, in Kinmundy, the daughter of Benjamin and Fina Howell Garrett.
She was a retired Lab Technician and a member of the Kinmundy Christian Church.
Surviving is one niece, Helen (Garrett) Leckrone of Hammond, Indiana.
Graveside services were held on Friday at Evergreen Cemetery.
Arrangements were made by Linton Neal Funeral Home in Kinmundy.

Mrs. Clyde BASSETT Funeral Wednesday:
Mamie GARRETT BASSETT, youngest daughter of William and Ella LANSFORD GARRETT, was born in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois, on February 11, 1901, and passed away quietly after a long illness at her home near Kinmundy, July 21st, 1946, age 45 years, 5 months, and 10 days.
Early in life she united with the Methodist Church at Arnold Chapel, from which she never moved her membership.
On Sept. 14, 1929, she was married
to Clyde BASSETT. Two daughters came to bless this home, Evelyn and Helen. Besides these two devoted children and her faithful companion, she is survived by four brothers and two sisters, Selby, Alma, Ill.; Berthol, Frank, and Clyde of Kinmundy; Mrs. Hazel LIVESAY of Decatur, Ill.; and Mrs. Esta ROBB of Kinmundy; and a host of relatives and friends. Mamie was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a true and loyal friend and neighbor and will be sadly missed by this whole community.
The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Methodist Church, in Kinmundy, Rev. BRAKEMEYER officiating, and interment made in Sandy Branch Cemetery.

Obituary
Theodore Garrett was born Aug. 18, 1862, in Foster township and departed this life Sept. 14, 1925, at the age of 63 years and 25 days.
He was the third of six children of Thomas and Catherine Garrett, and of his parental family, is survived by only one brother, William Garrett.
On Oct. 21, 1881, he was united in marriage to Icy Doolen, and to this union were born eight children: Emma, Claude, Gene, Laura, Hattie, Minnie, Lela, and Dorothy, all of which are living, save, Laura, who was called to her eternal Home, May 25, 1924. Then, too, they took into their home when very small, a niece, Allie Jones Thomas, who was to them, as an own child, and who received the same devotion and love as the other children.
He became a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge at Vernon on Aug. 17, 1899, of which he was always a faithful member.
He was a friend to all, and will ever be remembered by his neighbors as an upright, just, unselfish man, who ever upheld the standard of honor, truth, and love, and always stood ready to play the part of the Good Samaritan, when occasion demanded.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Icy Garrett, one brother, William Garrett, two sons, five daughters, 16 grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
The funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. C.H. Carlton, of Vernon, and the body was laid to rest in the Evergreen Cemetery.
The I.O.O.F. Lodge of Vernon rendered a beautiful service at the grave.

Charles Guffey, 92
Charles Robert Guttey, 92, of Vandalia. formerly of Four Mile community, died at 7:45 a.m. Sunday. Dec. 27, 1981, in Fayette County Hospital, Vandalia.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Claggett Funeral Home, Brownstown with burial in Reforme Cemetery, Loogootee.
Mr. Guffey was born Dec 1, 1889, in Loogootee, son of Noah and Janie Deal Guffey. He was a retired farmer and a World War veteran. He married
Myrna M. Rine in 1930. She died in 1951.
Surviving is his sister, Mrs. Ralph Edna Wllis of Vandalia.

Hamilton, Darrell Mahon
Darrell HAMILTON
Darrell M. Hamilton, 62, of Vandalia died at 4:40 p.m. Friday, Oct.19, in Fayette County Hospital, Vandalia.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Berry and Hohlt Funeral Home, Vandalia, the Rev. Dr. Archie Brown officiating.
Burial was in Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia.
Mr. Hamilton was born in Loogootee April 1, 1911, a son of Fred and Osceola(Mahon) Hamilton.
He and Verna Crotser were married
August 17, 1932, at Salem.
He was a member of the Vandalia Moose Lodge.
Surviving are his wife; daughters, Mrs. Donna Smith of Vandalia, Mrs. Charlotte Cosselman of Mound, Minn., Mrs. Marilyn Patterson of Mt. Vernon; sons, Robert of Vandalia, Geneof Minooka, Jack of Mt. Vernon; mother of Vandalia; sisters, Rochelle Hamilton, Mrs. Helen Smith, both of Vandalia, Mrs. Frances Wolff of Centralia; brothers, Myron of Panama City, Fla., Charles, Richard, Fred, all of Vandalia;
seven grandchildren.
