Ann Nielander, widowed with three kids, owned bar
When her husband died in 1960, Ann S. Nielander was left with a business to run, volunteering to do and three small children to take care of.
"It took a lot of courage and love to raise three young children by herself at that time," said Mary Ann Day, Mrs. Nielander's daughter.
Mrs. Nielander, of Fort Wright, died Thursday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home.
Nielander's Cafe, the bar she and her husband opened more than 50 years ago, still sits at 21st and Garrard streets in Covington. The family doesn't own it anymore, but the name is still the same.
Mrs. Day remembers how happy it made her mother when her children would ride their bikes to the bar from Fort Wright to surprise her.
"She'd have the biggest smile on her face."
Mrs. Nielander rented the bar out in the 1960s and went to work as a clerk at the IRS in Covington. She was a member and former officer and board of trustees member of South Hills Civic Club.
She belonged to the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and volun teered at St. Elizabeth Medical Center and Booth Hospital.
Other survivors include a son, Charles A. Nielander of Lafayette, Ind.; a daughter, Kathleen Underwood, of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; a brother, Joseph Sullivan of Venice, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home in Covington. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to charity of choice.
Margaret Snowden Abney, 91, of Newport, died Thursday at Batavia Convalescent Nursing Inn, Batavia, Ohio. She was a homemaker and a member of First Church of the Nazarene, Newport. Her husband, Virden Abney, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Audra Abney of Newport and Farell Abney of Cincinnati; a daughter, Marceline Furnish of Newport; a brother, Thomas Turner of Dayton, Ohio; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Church of the Nazarene, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Lee Alexander, 97, of Jackson, Mich., formerly of Dry Ridge, died Sept. 19 at his residence. He was retired from F.W. Stock and Sons, Hillsdale, Mich. His wife, Anna Webster Alexander, preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughters, Opalene Smith of Hillsdale, Mich., and Doris Hosler of Nashport, Ohio; a son, Donald Alexander of Jackson, Mich.; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Thursday at St. John-White Funeral Home, Reading, Mich. Burial was in Maplewood cemetery in Michigan. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, handled local arrangements.
Sharon R. Blades, 51, of Covington, died at 4:40 p.m. Thursday at her residence.
Arrangements are pending at Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington.
Onie Blevins, 64, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Admirel Blevins, died in 1994.
Survivors include sons, Donnie Blevins of Covington, and Jerry Blevins, Danny Blevins and Wade Blevins, all of Clay County; a daughter, Lisa Collette of Hyden; sisters, Nancy Ann Blair of London, Hazel Adkins of Dayton and Mavie Griffith of Hyden; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Grand Avenue Church of God, Taylor Mill, and noon Sunday at Hensley Holiness Church, Clay County, with visitation from 10 a.m. before both services. Burial will be in Blevins Family Cemetery, Hyden. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.
Darrell W. Brown, 44, of Covington, died at 6 a.m. Thursday at his residence.
Arrangements are pending at Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington.
Harold B. Cook, 80, of Corinth, died at 6:40 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County in Williamstown.
He was a retired senior chief machinist mate for the U.S. Navy, a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, a member and elder of Corinth Christian Church, a past master of Fort Thomas Masonic Lodge No. 808 F&AM, and a member of F&AM Grand Lodge of Kentucky and Grant County Men for Christ.
His first wife, Virginia Ruth Neal Cook, died in 1959. Survivors include his wife, Martha Redd Cook; a son, Dennis N. Cook of Loveland, Ohio; a daughter, Deborah Cook Clark of Florence; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, with visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.

Betty Bickers Graves, 72, of Fort Thomas, died at 7 a.m. Friday at her residence.
She was a retired assistant manager for the credit card department at Newport National Bank and Star Bank and a member of Christ Church, United Church of Christ, Fort Thomas.
Survivors include her husband, Harold Graves; daughters, Janet Graves of Fort Thomas, Shirley Collins of Wilder and Sharon Bintz of Alexandria; sisters, Bernice Johnson of Southgate, Thelma Long of Bellevue, Patricia Chambers of Alexandria and Leola Rensick of Connersville, Ind.; a brother, Richard Bickers of Newport; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Christ Church United Church of Christ, Fort Thomas, with visitation from 10 a.m. Entombment will be in Evergreen cemetery Mausoleum, Southgate.

Elizabeth Brooks Hutcherson, 81, of Lexington, formerly of Corinth, died Thursday at Mayfair Manor in Lexington.
She was a retired president for Corinth Deposit Bank, a member of Hinton United Methodist Church, Hinton, and attended Corinth Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, James W. Hutcherson of Lexington; a sister, Iva K. Mayer of Alexandria; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth, with visitation from 4 to 7 tonight. Burial will be in Raven Creek Cemetery, Corinth.

Ray Robb, 83, of Sharonville, Ohio, formerly of Bellevue, died Friday at West Chester Health Care Center in West Chester, Ohio.
He was a retired electrician for General Motors, a veteran of World War II and a former post commander for Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Robb; a son, Gary R. Robb of Las Vegas; a daughter, Mary Jo Stith of Montgomery, Ala.; a stepson, Walter Clepper Jr. of Cincinnati; a stepdaughter, Elaine Poe of Liberty Township, Ohio; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, with visitation from noon. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
James P. Roberts, 76, of Independence, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. He was a retired Army sergeant major and World War II veteran.
Survivors include his wife, M. Jane Roberts; sons, Jeremy Roberts of Independence and Mason Carey of Newport; daughters, Melody Dilts and Jamie Roberts of Dayton and Melissa Roberts of Independence; a half-brother, Michael Federika of Bradenton, Fla.; eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Monday at Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere-Erlanger, with visitation from 6 p.m. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
Robert Ward, 74, of Madison, Ind., died Friday at King's Daughter Hospital in Madison. He was a retired school bus driver for Carroll County Board of Education, an Army veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post No. 41.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Simmons Ward of Carrollton; a son, Denny Ward of Scottsburg, Ind.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and after 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Carrollton IOOF Cemetery.
