Paul R. Snyder, founding member of St. Luke's board; sold insurance
Loyalty - to his family, friends, community and his roots - helped define the life of Paul R. Snyder.
Mr. Snyder, 92, of Fort Thomas, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
He was the founder and owner of Snyder Insurance Agency in Fort Thomas and a founding member of the board of St. Luke Hospital. He served on the board for 31 years.
"I think of all the things of which he was the most proud, it was his association with St. Luke," said Mr. Snyder's grandson, Steve Pendery.
Pendery, the Campbell County judge-executive, now operates the firm, called Pendery Insurance and Risk Management, along with his brother, Tom.
William J. Williams, a longtime St. Luke Hospital board member and chairman, considered Mr. Snyder a mentor, as well as a friend. "In a quiet way, he was my guardian and mentor, in the Optimist Club and the hospital board," said Williams.
"I'll always have fond memories of him. He had a very good sense of humor. He was very loyal to his friends and very good to his family," Williams said.
Mr. Snyder was a regional manager for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. when he retired in his late 50s and started his own agency, Pendery said. "He had the agency until he retired, about four or five years ago. He was here every day," Pendery said.
Mr. Snyder was successful in business, his grandson believes, because he inspired trust. "He was one of those people you could be around for five minutes, and you would trust him," said Pendery.
Reared on a farm near New Philadelphia, Ohio, Mr. Snyder never lost his love of the soil. "He was in his 70s when he bought a farm in Bracken County. He put in a garden, put up fences and all. He did it to stay young," said Pendery.
Mr. Snyder was also an active member of the board of Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights and was a past president of the Newport Optimist Club. He was a member of the Newport Civic Association; the New Philadelphia, Ohio, Masonic Lodge; and the Church of the Brethren in New Philadelphia.
