Mary Blocher, amateur radio buff
In some ways, Mary Ellen Owens Blocher was a traditional wife and mother.
But in other ways, Mrs. Blocher was an innovator who learned communication skills she could use to help others.
In 1956, Mrs. Blocher followed the lead of her husband, Harold F. Blocher, and obtained her amateur radio operator's license.
Mrs. Blocher later became a member of the Amateur Radio Relay League, the Queen City Emergency Network, the Northern Kentucky Amateur Radio Club and the Greater Cincinnati Amateur Radio Association.
"She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother," Mr. Blocher said. "She was soft-spoken, but she had a mind of her own. She kept a low-profile, but she let you know what she was thinking."
Mrs. Blocher, 68, of Highland Heights, died Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati.
Mrs. Blocher grew up near Cincinnati and met her husband at a company picnic. The Blochers were married
for 48 years and shared a love for their children and grandchildren and amateur radio. Mr. Blocher said his wife enjoyed communicating with people in Greater Cincinnati.
"She spoke to people locally and in Dayton, Ohio. We would attend conventions together," Mr. Blocher said.
One of their sons, Harold F. Blocher II, was a council member for several years in Highland Heights.
Mrs. Blocher was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Church in Cold Spring.
Other survivors include sons, Douglas Blocher of Cold Spring and Robert Blocher of Amelia, Ohio; a daughter, Wendy Blocher of Highland Heights; a brother, John J. Owens of Cincinnati; sisters, Ruth E. Simmons of Cincinnati and Agnes Smith of Bright, Ind.; and seven grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in Persimmon Grove Cemetery.
Richard Carter, 71, of Florence, died 10:37 p.m. Tuesday at his residence.
Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.
James "Bob" Curtis, 76, of Augusta, died Monday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. He was a retired maintenance worker with F. A. Neider Co. in Augusta, a member of the Augusta Volunteer Fire Department and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Boothe Curtis; sons, Ronnie Curtis of Johnsville, Donnie Curtis of Ripley, Ohio, and Tom Curtis of Augusta; a daughter, Anita Henderson of Maysville; a brother, Adrian Curtis of Augusta; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highlands Cemetery, Augusta. Memorials are suggested to charity.
Delma Drohan, 91, of Erlanger, died Monday at her home. She was a retired sales clerk with Shillito's Department Store and a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church and the Grandma's Club, both in Ludlow. Her husband, Edward J. Drohan, died in in 1985. A son, Edward C. Drohan Sr., died in 1991.
Survivors include two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sts. Boniface and James Church. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. James R. Gray, 55, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Alexandria, died Sept. 21 at his home. He was a minister and educator.
Survivors include a nephew.
Memorial services will be Sunday at University of Northern Virginia in Washington, D.C. Alexandria Funeral Home is handling local arrangements.
Michael Eugene King, 50, of Bellevue, died Monday at his home. He was a disabled painter.
Survivors include brothers, Delzie King, Delmer King and Kenny King, all of Cincinnati.
Funeral procession will leave at 11 a.m. Friday from Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, to Baltimore Pike cemetery in Cincinnati for graveside services. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight at the funeral home.
Jane B. Kleintank, of Florence, died Saturday at Florence Park Care Center. She formerly owned Jane's Restaurant. Her husband, Willard Kleintank, and a daughter, Barbara MacKenzie, both died in 1981.
There are no immediate survivors.
No services are planned. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
Bernice M. Kroger, 97, of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home in Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Thomas Rosary Society and the Newport Daughters of Isabella. Mrs. Kroger was an avid volunteer at Carmel Manor. Her husband, Henry A. Kroger, died in 1983.
Survivors include daughters, Marilyn Adick of West Chester, Ohio, and Elaine Rauckhorst of Oxford, Ohio; a son, Rev. John Kroger of Bellevue; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas Church in Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 9:15 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Loran May, 58, of West Covington, died Sunday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was disabled.
Survivors include a brother, Ronald May of Covington; and sisters, Norma Peare and Geneva Fleek, both of West Covington, and Carol Kerl of Florence.

Harlan "Chick" Morris Jr., 73, of Florence, died at 10:28 a.m. Tuesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. He was an entertainer for 55 years, having fronted the Chick Morris Trio that performed on "Midwestern Hayride" television show. Mr. Morris later was a salesman with Turner Motors in Newport.
He was a member of Community Pentecostal Church in Taylor Mill and Disabled American Veterans, and he was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include sons, Philip W. Morris of Independence, Jerry A. Morris of Walton, Randy W. Morris of Florence, Gary L. Morris of Erlanger and Greg A. Morris of Cincinnati; a stepson, Rodney Moore of Erlanger; daughters, Cheryl K. Hubuner of Dry Ridge, Theresa Morris of Crittenden, Tina R. Morris of Crescent Springs, Renee Adams of Covington, Barbara Herzog and Linda Philpot, both of Florence; brothers, Robert Morris and David Morris, both of Newport; sisters, Shirline Rindsberg of Fort Thomas, Mary Lou Harris of Newport and Bernadine Harold of Florence; 30 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Latonia Full Gospel Pentecostal Church. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Connley Bros. Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.
Charles G. Mulroney, 78, of Newport, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a pattern maker with Standard Castings in Cincinnati and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Jean Mulroney, died in 1988. A son, Stephen Mulroney, died in 1997.
Survivors include sons, Charles T. Mulroney and Timothy Mulroney, both of Fort Thomas, Thomas Mulroney of Bellevue, David Mulroney of Covington, Dan Mulroney of Independence and Michael Mulroney of Cincinnati; daughters, M. Charlean Sullivan of Florence and Kathleen Plagakis of Bellevue; eight grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Thursday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to charity.
Gertrude "Betty" Noell, 61, of Walton, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was owner of Betty's Keepsakes and Collectables in Florence, and a department store clerk with Benton & Bonar, Walton. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Walton, where she was a Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Noell; daughters, Denah Clinebell of Covington and Paula Stanton of Middletown, Ohio; a son, David W. Noell of Walton; a brother, Jack Maxwell of Burlington; a sister, Juanita Scudder of Florence; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Beaver Lick Christian Cemetery, Walton. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church of Walton, 47 S. Main St., Walton, Ky. 41094.
Bernice Bell Tomlinson, 89, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died Monday at Meadows Health Care Center in Cincinnati. She was an assistant buyer with local department stores. Her husbands, Eugene Randall and William E. Tomlinson, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Jo Donnell; a son, Robert Randall; sisters, Lina Mae Riddle, Irene Peeno and Eva Edmonds; 12 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Landmark Baptist Temple, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Vorhis Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
William Franklin Wolf, 68, of Grants Lick, died at 5:59 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired supervisor with Early Daniel Grain Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Plum Creek Christian Church in Butler. He was a former deacon and elder with the church.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Wolf; a son, Don Wolf of Grants Lick; daughters, Peggy Pribble and Debbie Seever, both of Grants Lick; his stepmother, Mary Wolf of Grants Lick; sisters, Mary Fern Kiser of Grants Lick, Lois Gosney of Butler and Helen Behymer of Madison, Ind.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Plum Creek Christian Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in Plum Creek Cemetery, Butler.
