Robert Ervin, store owner, patriot

Robert B. Ervin believed in serving his country, his family and his friends.

He managed to do all three by spending 20 years in the Air Force, most of his life as a father and as the operator of his own business, the Southgate Carry-out near Fort Thomas.

Mr. Ervin, 67, of Fort Thomas, died at 10:50 a.m. Tuesday at his home. He has been ill for several years and died about four hours after a sister, Pearl Johnting, 69, of Newport, died earlier Tuesday at her daughter's home in Florence.

A son, Ronald E. Ervin of Cold Spring, said his father and aunt were close.

However, he said the deaths were a coincidence. His father has been ill for several years while Ms. Johnting has only recently taken ill, Ronald Ervin said.

Robert Ervin was a retired Air Force technical sergeant. He served in Korea during the Korean War and also served in Japan and in Dayton, Ohio.

Mr. Ervin inspired Ronald Ervin to serve 20 years in the Army.
