Carl Krebs, built Highland Heights' parks

Anyone who has ever been on a picnic or taken in a ball game at a Highland Heights park has Carl Krebs to thank.

Mr. Krebs, a Highland Heights native, was part of a grass-roots organization committed to raising money for local parks before he helped found the city's parks and recreation commission.

Without him, the baseball, volleyball and soccer fields at Reuscher Park would never have been built, Mayor Charles Roettger said.

They required more than 1,000 cubic feet of dirt to fill a ravine where the fields were to be built. Mr. Krebs got people to donate money but also offered his time and construction equipment for the project.

Mr. Krebs, 70. died Thursday at University Hospital in Cincinnati.

"The community has lost a friend, that's for sure," Roettger said.

Mr. Krebs was a true asset to Highland Heights, Roettger said. He spent more than a decade on the planning and zoning commission, was a founder of the Highland Heights Businessmen's Association and an honorary member of the Highland Heights Volunteer Fire Department.

"He loved his city desperately," said his wife of 20 years, Judith Ann Krebs, a Highland Heights City Council member.

The city would call him at anytime no matter the weather conditions if there was a water main or sewer break, said his son, Joseph Krebs of Highland Heights.

"In 1986, the water mains in most of the cities froze and broke. He and his men worked all Christmas Eve and Christmas Day so people wouldn't be without water," his son said.

Mr. Krebs, an independent contractor, started hauling cinder blocks in 1947, then progressed to hauling sand and gravel and doing excavation work.

He founded Krebs Construction 52 years ago. During the Korean War, his mother ran the business for him.

Mr. Krebs also served as treasurer of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, St. Joseph Council, in Cold Spring.
