Leo Fleckinger, liked to cook
To those closest to him, Leo A. Fleckinger was known as "friend, brother, uncle, neighbor, Lee."
"I lived next door to him for five years, and that's what we called him, along with Lee Bird," said Mr. Fleckinger's brother, Jerry.
Lee Fleckinger, 59, of Independence, died Saturday in St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a retired salesman with Lazarus Department Store, where he worked for 27 years, and a member of Mary Queen of Heaven Church, Erlanger.
"He sold shoes at Lazarus downtown, and worked his way up to supervisor," said his brother.
Mr. Fleckinger retired from Lazarus about a dozen years ago because of health problems, Jerry Fleckinger said.
"He worked as long as he could. He was very determined," said his brother.
Mr. Fleckinger had battled through a number of medical problems, including brain surgery in 1970 and open heart surgery in 1991. He had a lung removed earlier this month.
While disabled, Mr. Fleckinger took up cooking as a hobby and became quite good at it, his brother said.
Mr. Fleckinger's specialties were oyster dressing and lasagna, and he sometimes cooked for his grandchild, University of Kentucky football player Brandon White, and his roommates, Jerry Fleckinger said.
Mr. Fleckinger hunted and fished in his younger years, and was known for woodworking. "He was a fine craftsman. People were always after him to finish their antiques, including pianos," his brother said.
Most of all, Mr. Fleckinger was a dedicated family man, said Jerry Fleckinger. "His children and grandchildren ranged from 40 to 1 year, and he was very close to them."
