Jesse Mullikin, truck driver, volunteer fireman
Jesse V. Mullikin of Elsmere was a hard-working truck driver, a family man, an active church member - even a volunteer firefighter and part-time policeman.
The range of Mr. Mullikin's contributions prompted his son-in-law, Michael Thomas of Elsmere, to catch his breath when asked to describe Mr. Mullikin's character.
"He would be the neighbor you would like to have," Mr. Thomas said quietly.
Mr. Mullikin, 84, died Tuesday night at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
Mr. Mullikin was born in Dry Ridge and lived 61 years in Elsmere. He worked 31 years as a truck driver for the former Consolidated Freight Lines in Cincinnati and Hamilton, Ohio, before retiring in 1977.
"He hauled just about anything. One time, it was pennies," said Mr. Thomas.
Mr. Mullikin's job took him around the country, most often to Knoxville, St. Louis and Dayton, Ohio.
But he remained an active citizen of Elsmere. He was one of the city's first volunteer firefighters, serving during the 1940s to the 1960s with the Elsmere Volunteer Fire Department.
During the 1960s, Mr. Mullikin also worked as a part-time policeman on weekends.
"It was way back when Elsmere was a pretty tight, close-knit community and everybody knew everybody and that's the way things were, you helped people out," Mr. Thomas said.
"That's the kind of stuff he was interested in doing."
Mr. Thomas said his father-in-law was an usher for 25 years at St. Henry Church in Elsmere, where Mr. Mullikin also was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.
"He had a very strong faith," Mr. Thomas said. "He tried to help out any way he could help out."
When he had his health, Mr. Mullikin liked to tinker with his car, doing maintenance or repair work.
Mr. Mullikin and his wife, Virginia Wocher Mullikin, had been married
54 years when she died in 1993.
