William Bradley, restored antique furniture
William H. Bradley was a man of gentle patience who could coax the beauty out of a piece of wood as finely as he could draw the best out of the people around him.
Mr. Bradley died in his sleep at his Edgewood home on Wednesday, a year after he was diagnosed with lung cancer.
He had worked for General Motors in the company's quality control accounting and finance department in Cincinnati for 29 years, and after retirement he volunteered as an ambassador at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
He was on the missions and worship councils at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Lakeside Park.
For much of his life he restored and refinished antique furniture and built furniture, turning rich cherry and walnut into dining room sets and bedroom sets.
For his grandchildren, he made fine wooden keepsake boxes with locks, where they would keep their special treasures, said his wife, Bertine.
"He was a loving, gentle man who respected and loved everybody," Mrs. Bradley said. "He especially loved children."
The Bradleys had eight grandchildren and were a dependable cheering section at every ball game and dance recital.
"We went to all the grandparent days at school," Mrs. Bradley said. "Children who didn't have grandparents borrowed him for grandparent day," she said.
Mr. Bradley was just as interested and attentive to those borrowed grandchildren as to his own, his wife said.
Mr. Bradley was an Army veteran of World War II and had been a prisoner of war from 1944 until the war ended in 1945.
