Frances Elam, Kenton Outstanding Citizen
Frances Henderson Elam, who was recognized in 1985 as an Outstanding Citizen of Kenton County for her lifelong volunteer work, died at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at Rosedale Manor in Latonia. She was 97.
Mrs. Elam taught her children they were members of a larger family, said her daughter, Norma E. Nehring of Independence.
During the Depression, Mrs. Elam helped run a soup kitchen at Third District School in Covington, making sure children had at least one nourishing meal a day. She also became an amateur barber, giving free haircuts to the school children, Mrs. Nehring said.
"She taught me to be there when people needed me. She taught me thrift and honesty and perseverance. She was great about doing things for other people," she added.
When she was working at the school soup kitchen, Mrs. Elam would go to grocery stores asking for soup bones and vegetables. While she was serving children whose families couldn't afford a noontime meal, her own children walked home to eat.
"She wanted to make sure there was enough for the children who needed it," Mrs. Nehring said.
Mrs. Elam had worked at Pressler's Cafeteria in Cincinnati as a young girl and married
James Elam in 1925. They had three daughters when the Depression hit.
"My father worked at anything he could," Mrs. Nehring said. "He worked as an ice man. He was a cab driver on weekends with our car. He was a moving man.
"My mother knew how to make the best of things. She always had a cheerful outlook. During World War II she donated blood as often as they would let her, she saved and rationed. My dad walked to work. They did without and never complained."
Mrs. Elam was a longtime member and volunteer with First Christian Church, Covington, where she was a member of the Loyal Women's Bible Class, president of the Christian Women's Fellowship, and served as a deaconess and member of the church board.
