Gordon Cable, mechanic, drag-racer, gave to others
Gordon E. Cable was known as "the old man" in his drag- racing days.
"Everybody else was in their 20s, and he was still drag racing in his 40s," said a daughter, Terrene Dillon of Florence. "He was a character."
Mr. Cable, 78, of Daytona Beach, Fla., died Monday at Good Samaritan Rest Home, Daytona Beach. He was the former owner of a Sunoco station at 19th and Madison in Covington and Gordon's Chevron in Florence. He was a mechanic who built his own race cars.
Mr. Cable, who was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, was a fun-loving person.
"He used a hearse to haul his race cars around and named it "Lou's Last Ride," in reference to his mother, Mrs. Dillon said.
"He was the spirit of all the family holidays. He liked to dance and tell jokes. He was just a fun-loving character. He laughed all the time."
Mr. Cable also helped the needy, often buying clothes and shoes for the poor, his daughter said.
"He was good to people," Mrs. Dillon said. "He always gave."
Other survivors include daughters Debbie Coppage of Independence, Kim Cable of San Diego and Randa Rushlow of Burlington; a sister, Rosemary Fahrenkamp of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence.
Kenneth Baker, 75, of Florence, died Sunday at his home. He was a machinist with W. M. Powell Co., Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Frances Thompson Baker; a daughter, Judy Bledsoe of West Harrison, Ind.; a son, Kenneth Wayne Baker of Florence; and four grandchildren.
Graveside services were this morning at Glen Haven Cemetery, Harrison, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075. Jackman-Kercheval-Meyers Funeral Home, Harrison, Ohio, is handling arrangements.
Earl Brooks, 86, of Highland Heights, died at 12:45 a.m. today at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.
Stewart Lee Florence, 75, of Bourbon County, died Sunday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. He was a farmer and a tobacco warehouseman, a member of Indian Creek Christian Church, Cynthiana, and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. His wife, Elizabeth Dockenbrode Florence, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Ann Doyle of Bourbon County; a brother, T. C. Florence of Harrison County; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Paris Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Indian Creek Christian Church Youth Group, Millersburg Pike, Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.
Willie Grace Gillham, 95, of Newport, died Monday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport.
Arrangements are pending at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.
Ople Robin Hamilton, 71, of Wheatley, died Monday at Norton's Hospital, Louisville. He was a retired farmer and retired maintenance worker with Teledyne Packaging Co., Carrollton, and a member of Dallasburg Lodge No. 621 F&AM in Wheatley. His wife, Ruby Fortner Hamilton, died in 1992.
Survivors include a son, Larry Hamilton of Wheatley; brothers, Arthur Hamilton of Wheatley and Dallas Hamilton of Owenton; a sister, Lue Ree Ball of Wheatley; and one step-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Dallasburg Masonic Cemetery, Wheatley.
Faye D. Hampton, 66, of Union, died Sunday at her home. She was a retired seamstress.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Eugene T. Hampton; a son, Rick T. Hampton of Villa Hills; a sister, Elise Leach of Orlando, Fla.; brothers, Dewey Whitson of Lexington, Don Whitson of Hinton and Scottie Whitson of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Timothy Church, Union. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Eleanor Leake, 71, of Aberdeen, Ohio, died at 4:18 p.m. Friday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a homemaker and attended Calvary Temple, Maysville.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Leake of LaGrange; a sister, Doris Newell of Aberdeen, Ohio; and two grandsons. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at noon today. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery.
Virginia Smith Million, 93, of Cynthiana, died Sunday at Grand Haven Nursing Home, Cynthiana. She was a retired secretary and treasurer with Sleepy Head House, Lexington, and a member of Trinity Hill Methodist Church, Cynthiana. Her husband, H. Clay Million, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice Feeback of Cynthiana; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Stephen W. "Moose" Morris, 48, of Cynthiana, died Monday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. He was a commodities manager with Square D Co., Lexington and an area and district chairman of Ducks Unlimited. He was a volunteer hunting safety instructor, a past president of the Cynthiana Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of Quail Unlimited; Harrison County Quail and Wildlife Organization and BPOE Lodge No. 438, Cynthiana.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Kuster Morris; his mother, Mary Ruth Feix Morris of Cynthiana; and a brother, Fred T. Morris of Harrison County.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Jacob Brett Norrick, 1 month, of Florence, died Sunday at Children's Hospital, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his parents, Weylan Norrick and Regina Wade, both of Florence; and grandparents, James and Barb Cupp of Walton, Kim Steinhauer of Williamstown and Judy Steinhauer of Florence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Hughes Chapel Cemetery, Union.
Ward Clifton Rees, 95, of Taylor Mill, died at 4:25 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired tool and die hardener with Ford Motor Co., Cincinnati, and a member of First Evangelical Methodist Church, Latonia.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Ida Mae Rees; and a nephew, former Kenton County Sheriff Lindo Foster of Taylor Mill.
Services will be at noon Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Clem Reker Jr., 82, of Covington, died Friday at Manor Care, Cincinnati. He was a self-employed home improvements salesman.
Survivors include sons, Clem E. Reker of Crestview Hills and Mark Reker of Fort Mitchell; daughters, Stephany Weber of Nashville and Victoria Davis of Farmington, N.M.; a sister, Dorothy Fugman of Los Angeles; and nine grandchildren.
No services are planned. Mr. Reker bequeathed his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.
V. June Wurth White, 68, of Eugene, Ore., formerly of Covington, died Friday at her daughter's home in Eugene. She was a retired waitress at David's Buffet and Colony Restaurant in Cincinnati. Her husband, Kenneth White, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Vickie L. Jump and Christine Crandall, both of Eugene, and Deborah Buchanan of Seaside, Ore.; and nine grandchildren.
Memorial services will be Wednesday in Seaside, Ore. Burial will be in Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Ore. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling local arrangements.
