'Bebe' Dougherty, athlete, kids' coach
Daniel "Bebe" Dougherty was looking forward to the day he would see his three grandsons play basketball.
A co-founder of the Fort Thomas Junior Basketball league, volunteer coach for Highlands High School and former basketball star himself, Mr. Dougherty had a passion for the sport. His sons had played, and he hoped his grandsons would continue the tradition, his wife said.
"I guess he'll just have to watch them from some other place," said his wife of 51 years, Mary Dougherty.
Mr. Dougherty, 74, of Fort Thomas, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was a draftsman with Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co. for 39 years and an Army veteran of World War II.
He and his wife both grew up in Bellevue; after marrying, they moved to Fort Thomas.
Mr. Dougherty, a standout in basketball, football and track while at Bellevue High School, is in the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
Mr. Dougherty helped coach the Highlands basketball team even last year, when illness began to slow him down, Mrs. Dougherty said.
"He was very easygoing but always on the go," Mrs. Dougherty said.
"When he got sick, we didn't think he'd be one to stay in bed or stay sitting down for long."
Besides starting the basketball league in 1976, Mr. Dougherty was also a past president of the Fort Thomas Junior Football league.
