Jerry King a lifelong Bracken supporter
Jerry Dean King never lived more than five miles away from the Bracken County home where he was born.
A former county magistrate and co-chairman of the Bracken County Democratic Party, he immersed himself in local politics.
"He was very devoted to talking to people about their concerns for the county," said his daughter, Anna Cummins, of Brooksville.
Mr. King, 59, died Thursday at his home in Neave. He was an assistant manager at Brooksville Farm and Supply, a farmer and landowner. He was a member of Brooksville Masonic Lodge No. 154 F&AM.
Mr. King, a farmer for most of his life, would set down what he was doing, no matter what, to help somebody else, Mrs. Cummins said.
He was a religious man, who served as a deacon and song leader at Willow Baptist Church. Besides farming, singing was his favorite hobby, Mrs. Cummins said.
Mr. King was part of a family singing group called King's Heirs, which included Mrs. Cummins and his wife. They sang for other churches and revivals.
Her father liked to make people smile, Mrs. Cummins said.
"He had a wonderful sense of humor," she said. "He always had something positive to say and would take a situation and make the best out of it."
Survivors include his wife, Joetta Jefferson King; daughters, Jara Jo King of Brooksville and Anna Katherine Cummins of Brooksville; a brother, Charles Allen King of Brooksville; and two grandsons.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Willow Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Burial will be in Bracken Memorial Cemetery, Brooksville. Memorials are suggested to Bracken County Public Library or Willow Baptist Church, both in Brooksville, Ky. 41004.
James W. "Billy" Anderson, 53, of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday at University Medical Center in Lexington. He was a member of Sparta Baptist Church.
Survivors include a brother, George Anderson of Jefferson County; and a sister, Rose Mary Estes of Owenton.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at McDonald Funeral Home, Seminary Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.
Lois P. Bates, 58, of Covington, died at 12:34 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She worked in the laundry department at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Covington. Her husband Lonzo Bates died in 1987.
Survivors include her daughter, Lisa Bates of Covington; sons, Bobby Bates, Ronnie Bates and Terry Bates, all of Covington; brothers, Levoid Wilburn and Junior Wilburn, both of Michigan; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Don Catchen & Son Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be there from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday. Burial will be in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington.
Virginia B. Stallmeyer Brown, 78, of Bradenton, Fla., died Tuesday in Williamstown. She was retired, and was a volunteer with the Crusaders Club and the Orphans Club in Northern Kentucky and the Association for Seeing Eye Dogs in Florida.
Her husband, Clifford Brown, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Virginia Carter of Bradenton, Fla., and Karen Ward of Edgewood; sons, Clifford Brown of Cincinnati, Robert Thomas Brown of Charleston, S.C., Henry Brown of Orlando, Fla., and David Brown of Tallahassee, Fla.; a sister, Rosemary Huneke of Cincinnati; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Redwood School and Rehabilitation Center, 71 Orphanage Road, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017.
Violette Harding Caswell, 82, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Batson Caswell, died in 1992. A son, Jerry Caswell, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Joe Caswell of Falmouth; a daughter, Velma Ruth Barkley of Cynthiana; brothers, Newton Harding Jr. and Aubrey Harding, both of Cynthiana; sisters, Ellen Arnold and Florence Sipe, both of Cynthiana, Dorothy Green of Berry, Pauline Earlywine of Carlisle and Christine McCord of Frankfort; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.
Mary Mullins Chapman, 82, of Walton, died at 11 p.m. Thursday at her residence.
Arrangements are pending at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.
Richard M. Daugherty, 94, of Florence, died 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a retired steel worker with Newport Steel, and a member of Latonia Christian Church and Northern Kentucky Senior Citizens.
His wife, Anna E. Daugherty, died in 1983.
Survivors include daughters, Gayle Egnor of Florence and Linda Henry of Nixa, Mo.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.
Russell Daugherty, 83, of Falmouth, died Thursday in Cynthiana.

William Howard Hatfield, 72, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. He was a farmer, carpenter and a member of Cynthiana Christian Church, where he served as a deacon.
He was an Army veteran of World War II. A son, Louis Shawn Hatfield, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Irvin Hatfield; sons, William Howard "Billy" Hatfield Jr., Myron Reginald Hatfield and Randy Griggs Hatfield, all of Cynthiana; brothers, Marvin Hatfield of Newport, Harlan Hatfield of Florence, Myron Hatfield of Hamilton, Ohio, and Raymond Hatfield of Cynthiana; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Hettie Marksberry Kemper, 83, of Owenton, died Wednesday at Owen County Memorial Hospital in Owenton. She was a retired practical nurse with the hospital and was a member of Owenton First Christian Church. Her husband, Joseph B. Kemper, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Ron ald Kemper of Holden, Mass.; a daughter, Anita Toole of Owenton; a half-brother, Roy Clark Marksberry of Pleasant Home; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Cleva Lee Monson, 60, of Augusta, died Thursday at Extenda Care, Augusta. She was a homemaker and a member of Brooksville Christian Church.

Luvenia B. O'Hara, 82, of Corinth, died Thursday at Grant Manor Health Care Center, Williamstown. She was a homemaker and a member of St. William Church, Williamstown. Her husband, Lawrence O'Hara, died in 1985. A son, Bobby O'Hara, died in 1997.
Survivors include daughters, Mary Ann Cook of Williamstown and Betty Jo O'Hara of Greenville, S.C.; a son, Eddie O'Hara of Hayes, La.; brothers, Dal Ballenger of Holiday, Fla., and Nickie Ballenger of Lexington, S.C.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

James B. Smith, 77, of Carrollton, died Wednesday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. He was a member of the Carrollton American Legion Post and a World War II veteran.
Survivors include a son, Jimmie Smith of Toms River, N.J.; and brothers, Joseph Smith of California, Ellis Smith of Scottsburg, Ind., and John Smith and Robert Smith, both of Louisville.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. today at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.
Kaylee Beth Walton, daughter of Brian Walton and Amy Durham of Bellevue, was stillborn at 11:38 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Other survivors include grandparents, Kim Durham of Bellevue, Douglas Vickers of Newport, and Joe and Nancy Walton of Bellevue; and great-grandparents, Barb and David Ross of Bellevue, Rubin and Nellie Vickers of Newport, and May and David Verkamp of Bellevue.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.
