William C. Bridges, founded clubs for young athletes
William C. Bridges, who helped found the Fort Thomas Swim Club and the Fort Thomas Junior Baseball League, died Thursday at Hope Hospice in Fort Myers, Fla. He was 71.
Mr. Bridges and his wife, June Youtsey Bridges, had moved to North Fort Myers in 1985.
Longtime residents of Fort Thomas, they met when they were students at Highlands High School.
Mrs. Bridges taught math and business courses at Highlands for 24 years. Mr. Bridges worked for Procter & Gamble.
He was Marine Corps veteran and started working for Procter & Gamble after graduation from the University of Cincinnati in 1951. Three months later, he contracted polio and was hospitalized for a year, Mrs. Bridges said.
The polio weakened his right side, but he returned to work with a determination that would become characteristic.
"He was a good organizer," Mrs. Bridges said. "When there was something to be done, he got on it immediately."
When their son was about 10 years old, Mr. Bridges joined with other fathers to turn neighborhood baseball games into an organized league. The result was the Fort Thomas Junior Baseball League, with Mr. Bridges as its charter president.
The league started around 1959. Two years later, the couple got started on the swim club.
Mrs. Bridges recalled long meetings in their basement, as Mr. Bridges and other organizers sold memberships and planned construction. Volunteers helped build the original buildings.
Mr. Bridges was treasurer, and Mrs. Bridges helped keep the books.
The Bridgeses were charter members of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, which grew to 400 members.
"He liked to start things," Mrs. Bridges said. "He always got involved. That was his nature."
