Mary Wilson earned diploma at 84
Mary Lee Wilson had to quit school when she was a teen-ager, and she always regretted her lack of a high school diploma.
She finally earned it in 1993 when she was 84. She studied the algebra, history and English lessons she had missed so many years ago and earned a GED.
Her family celebrated with a party, where she wore a graduation gown.
"She just was so proud," said her daughter, Bobbie Bailey of Florence.
Mrs. Wilson, 90, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
Mrs. Wilson's mother died when Mrs. Wilson was a teen-ager. She had to find a job and couldn't attend school.
"She just never got a chance, but she always pushed us kids," Mrs. Bailey said.
Mrs. Wilson raised four children. Two, Anne Sanders and Jerry Wilson, died in 1992. She was a school cafeteria manager with Seaton High School in Cincinnati and Dixie Heights High School.
Mrs. Wilson's family, including sons-in-law Bill Bailey and Bill Meeker, helped take care of her as her health failed.
Other survivors include another daughter, Barbara Meeker of Independence; a sister, Virginia Stadelmann of Latonia; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Roy Wilson, died in 1988.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Pendleton County.
Vickie Smith Bowman, 52, of Covington, died at 10:29 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired sales representative with Hertz Rental Car Co.
Survivors include her husband, Gary L. Bowman; a son, Christian Simms of Dayton; her mother, Vera Mae Jones of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.
Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation will be at Cincinnati Cremation Co. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Fort Wright, Ky. 41011. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill, is in charge.
Margie West Brashear, 81, of Florence, died Saturday at her home. A homemaker, she was a memberof Christ Chapel in Florence, and a former member of Covenant Christian Church in Newport; a member of Campbell County Homemakers; and a former scout leader with the Licking Valley Girl Scouts Council.
Survivors include sons, Bob Brashear of Florence, Fred Brashear of Bowling Green and Jack Brashear of Burlington; a daughter, Marilyn B. Parrett of Florence; brothers, John West of Covington and Granet West of Bravard, N.C.; sisters, Myrtle Robinette of Branson, Mo., and Jean Dunn of Lakeland, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill, with visitation from 10 a.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Home Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
Della M. Wiseman Campbell, 85, of Bellevue, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. Daughters, Evelyn Baker and Betty Jolly, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Elmer Campbell and T. J. Campbell of Alexandria and Paul Campbell of Cold Spring; a daughter, Lucille Russell of Dayton; a sister, Mary Henry of Irvine; a brother, Fred Wiseman of Alexandria; 13 grandchildren and 19 great- grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, with visitation from 9 a.m. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
James D. Case, 69, of Newport, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired printer with Sax Printing Co., Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Grace Case; a daughter, Lisa Alsip of Covington; stepdaughters, Alice Peters of Arlington, Va., and Sandra Johnson of Newport; a stepson, Carl Peters of Elsmere; brothers, Luther Case of Independence, Jimmy Case of Alexandria and Russell Case of Park Hills; sisters, Thelma Marshall of Muncie, Ind., Gaye Adams of Irvine and Aggie Fahlbush of Newport; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport, with visitation 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and burial in Alexandria Cemetery.
Bob Flora, 72, of Maysville, died Friday at his home. He was a retired Navy veteran and a member of the Maysville VFW Post. Survivors include a sister, Ruth Breeze of Maysville.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carlisle Cemetery. Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville, is in charge.
Ellen Mayes Hampton, 77, of Florence, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was owner of the former Bambi's Day Care Center and a member of Cow Creek Old Regular Baptist Church. A son, Kevin Hampton, died in 1982.
Survivors include a daughter, Elaine Simpson of Glencoe; sons, Raymond Hampton of Buffalo, N.Y., Randall Hampton of Erlanger, Edgar Gene Hampton of Zolfo Springs, Fla.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton, with visitation 4 to 7 tonight and burial in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Ten Mile Baptist Church, Glencoe, Ky. 41046.
Nolan Jackson, 80, of Fort Mitchell, died Saturday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. A retired mail sorter with the U.S. Postal Service in Cincinnati, he was a member of National Association of Retired Federal Employees and of First Methodist Church, Covington.
His wife, Geneva Jackson, died in 1995. Survivors include a daughter, Dianne Jackson of Fort Mitchell; and a sister, Violet Howe of Montpelier, Ohio.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Floral Hills cemetery Chapel, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 Highway 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.
Bonnie Mae Massie, 74, of Erlanger, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired cook with Erlanger-Elsmere Schools and a member of Erlanger Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Harold A. Massie; sons, James Massie of Columbus, Ohio, Robert Massie of Villa Hills, Rodney Massie of Erlanger; a sister, Louise Wagner of Lakeside Park; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Erlanger Baptist Church with visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger and cremation at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Barbara Schadler Swinford, 47, of Gilbert, S.C., formerly of Independence, died Wednesday at her home.
She was a former store manager and a member of Lexington Baptist Church in Gilbert, S.C.
Survivors include her husband, Gary Swinford; sons, Sean Swinford and Quintin Swinford of Gilbert; a daughter, Kelly Swinford of Gilbert; a stepdaughter, Patty Hill of Costa Mesa, Calif.; a stepson, Eric Swinford of California; parents, Eugene and Geneva Schadler of Independence; sisters, Brenda Schadler and Bettina Schadler of Walton; brothers, Leslie Schadler of Walton and Willie Schadler of Madison, Miss.; and five step-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence, with visitation from 11 a.m. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Mausoleum, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Gideons International, P. O. Box 18488, Erlanger, Ky. 41018.
