Brooksville's Dr. Dewey Cummins helped found Bracken Public Library
Whether serving as the town doctor, helping to establish a public library or advising the Bracken County Board of Health, Dr. Dewey E. Cummins spent most of his life helping his neighbors.
Dr. Cummins, a native and long-time physician in Brooksville, was a charter member of the Bracken County Library Board, which was established in 1990 to build a public library. The idea drew some opposition, as some residents believed a privately operated library was the only one needed in Brooksville.
However, Dr. Cummins and others fought for the new public library, and the facility in Brooksville stands today as one of his board's finest achievements.
"He was very proud of the library," said his eldest son, Paul David Cummins of Cincinnati. "He always saw education as a big service to the community."
Dr. Cummins, 73, of Brooksville, died Tuesday in Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville.
Dr. Cummins served on the Legislative Research Committee on Aging, the Bracken County Board of Health, and was a member of the Bracken County school board.
Dr. Cummins knew his patients on a first-name basis. He was one the last doctors in the state who dispensed medicine from his office rather than refer his patients to a pharmacy.
He was the only doctor in Bracken County for many years and would often take his children with him on house calls. Dr. Cummins also received patients at his home, his son said.
"He was a good father, and he was a prankster. He was the life of the party," Paul Cummins said. "But he was also a good Christian man who raised us in the church."
Dr. Cummins was a past president of the Bracken County Lions Club and a member of Powersville Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and a song leader. He was also a member of the Kentucky and American medical associations. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
