Sister Schmidt loved working with kids
For most of her life, Sister Valeria Schmidt taught children in a host of grade schools in Northern Kentucky.
And, after her retirement, Sister Schmidt continued her affiliation with youngsters by being a volunteer at the St. Elizabeth Medical Centers in Covington and Edgewood.
"I know she enjoyed the pediatric unit and took toys to the children.
She was always oriented toward children," said a friend, Sister Andrea Collopy.
"She was a very outgoing person who got along with adults as well. I know she enjoyed her teaching."
Sister Schmidt, O.S.B., 80, of Villa Hills, died of cancer Wednesday at St. Walburg Monastery Infirmary in Villa Hills.
She was born in Latonia and entered St. Walburg Monastery in 1938. She took her final vows in 1943.
Sister Schmidt taught primary grades at several area schools, including St. Therese, St. Henry, Holy Cross and Blessed Sacrament schools and Villa Madonna Academy.
From 1975-87, she served in the pastoral ministry department of St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
She served her community through work and prayer after her retirement in 1987.
Her warm personality endeared her to students, friends and family, Sister Collopy said.
"She liked to talk. I think that was one of the things that made her approachable to children," Sister Collopy said.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Walburg Monastery.
Vigil services will begin there at 7:30 tonight. Burial will be in St. Walburg Monastery Cemetery, Villa Hills.

Lena Adi Baynum, 27, of Walton, was found dead Sept. 1 near Bethel, Ohio.
Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Gladys Ingram Howard, 89, of Florence, died Thursday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.
Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.
Hattie Pearl Carter Hume, 93, of Florence, died Thursday at her home.
She was a retired clerk with Local Board No. 63 of the Selective Service System, and a business manager and society editor with the McCreary County Record in Stearns.
She was a volunteer with the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, the March of Dimes and the Women's Auxiliary of Booth Hospital.
She was a member of the Florence Women's Club.
Her husband, Whitman Hume, died in 1978.
A son, Brian C. Hume, died in 1985.
Survivors include daughters Hannah Baird of Florence and Martha Hume of Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Polly Estes of Chicago; a brother, Paul Carter of Rocton, Ill.; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in Morgan Cemetery, Pendleton County.

Francis X. Paulin Sr., 82, of Cincinnati, died Wednesday at Vista Care Hospice, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Hartman Paulin; daughters Renee M. Deis of Philadelphia, Claire M. Hughes and Mary D. Oakes, both of Cincinnati; sons Francis X. Paulin Jr., Joseph W. Paulin and James A. Paulin, all of Cincinnati, and William B. Paulin of Alexandria; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Guardian Angels Church, Cincinnati.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at T. P. White & Sons Funeral Home, Cincinnati.
Burial will be in Guardian Angels Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Carolyn Lampe Siller, 70, of Newport, died Thursday at Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati.
She was the retired owner of Siller's Bakery in Dayton, and a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Newport.
She was a member of the church choir.
Survivors include her husband, William Siller; a son, Bill Siller Jr. of Covington; a daughter, Carole Lukjan of Fort Thomas; a brother, F. William Lampe of Cold Spring; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday and visitation will be
from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport, and 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
