Plumber John Smiley Sr., aided youth
John W. Smiley Sr. was a plumber who took pride in his profession and dedicated himself to helping Covington youth.
Mr. Smiley, a 1959 graduate of Holmes High School in Covington, was a basketball player who later served on the board of directors at Covington Turners, a gym and social club that helps youth on the West Side.
Mr. Smiley's wife of 37 years, Marty Smiley, described her husband as a gentle man who helped anyone who asked.
"He would do anything for anyone, no matter what time it was," Mrs. Turner said. "And he never charged what he could have charged. He was doing it for almost gratis."
Mr. Smiley, 57, of Covington, died at 12:15 a.m. Sunday at University Hospital in Cincinnati.
He was a retired journeyman plumber with Plumbers and Gas Fitters Union Local No. 59, Cincinnati and a member of Covington Turners and Taylor Mill Moose Lodge No. 1469.
The Smileys were high school sweethearts who graduated from Holmes High School together. She said she was always attracted to his quiet nature and the pride he took in his work.
In 1965, Mr. Smiley was recognized by a trade association as the best plumber in Kentucky and one of the best in the country, Mrs. Smiley said.
"He was always volunteering his services for different people," Mrs. Smiley said. "He was very nice and always polite, even back in high school."
Other survivors include his sons, John W. Smiley Jr. of Covington and Jay M. Smiley of Petersburg; a daughter, Stephanie Lynn Smiley-Roach of Covington; his mother, Helen Smiley of Covington; a sister, Marianne Overley of Lexington; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Entombment of cremains will be at Floral Hills Mausoleum, Taylor Mill. Eleanor L. Peeno Holschuh, 86, of Cincinnati, formerly of Constance, died Saturday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Mount Airy Campus in Cincinnati. She was a retired owner of a shoe store. Her husband, James H. Holschuh, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Ronald J. Holschuh of Cincinnati; a daughter, Barbara Alger of Florida; sisters, Phoebe Rogers and Nellie Hauser; four grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Frederick Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Arlington Memorial Cemetery, Cincinnati.
Florence Hubig, 88, of Newport, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Vincent DePaul Church in Newport and the Newport Hilltoppers. Sons, Donald Hubig and Gerald Hubig, and daughters, Estelle Hiance and Loretta Tischner, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters Carol Gindele of Melbourne, JoAnn Rumker of Silver Grove and Alberta Sharp of Amelia, Ohio; sons Charles A. Hubig of Melbourne and Kenneth Hubig of Fort Thomas; 26 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
Fannie Berkshire Jarrell, 90, of Florence, died Monday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown. She was a retired teacher with Boone County Schools and a member of the Boone County Schools Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include daughters Maxine C. Karsner of Leesburg, Fla., and June Bienz of Florence; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery.
John A. Kordenbrock, 62, of Falmouth, formerly of Ludlow, died at 4:10 p.m. Sunday in an airplane crash on a private airstrip off John Denny Road in Pendleton County. He was a retired owner of Air Flight Services, Cincinnati, and an Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Pamela Kordenbrock; sons John A. Kordenbrock II of Apple View, Calif., Jeffrey A. Kordenbrock of Jacksonville, Fla., Zachary A. Kordenbrock, at home, Russell Schilling of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., James Mason of Erlanger and Kenneth Mason of Villa Hills; a daughter, Jenay A. Kisling of Milford, Ohio; his mother, Violet Kordenbrock of Cincinnati; sisters Sharon Gaffney of Cincinnati, Glenda Mussman of Edgewood and Karen Lattin of Oceanside, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Martha Circle of Dorthea Pentecostal Church, Corbin, Ky. 40707.
George E. Martin, 83, of Crescent Springs, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Ira L. McNees Jr., 55, of Oklahoma City, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Thursday in Oklahoma City. He was a truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah McNees; two sons; two daughters; and his parents, Ira and Pansy McNees of Falmouth.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Morgan Cemetery, Pendleton County.
Pauline Murdock, 86, of Williamstown, died at 5 p.m. Sunday at Grant Manor Nursing Home in Williamstown. She was a homemaker and a member of Fort Mitchell Baptist Church. Her husband, John Murdock, died in 1987.
Survivors include a daughter, Dianne West of Lexington; a sister, Geraldine Ward of Latonia; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Fort Mitchell Baptist Church, 2323 Dixie Highway, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017.
Charley Peace Jr., 73, of Verona, was found dead Saturday at his home. He was a retired maintenance supervisor with the Cincinnati Time Recorder Co., and an Army veteran. His wife, Ellen Peace, died in 1996.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Minton of Warren, Mich.; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona.
David Lee Turner, 61, of Independence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a salesman with Jack's Glass in Elsmere and Covington and a member of Highland Avenue Baptist Tabernacle in Fort Thomas and the National Hotrod Association. He was a Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Joy Turner; a son, John Turner of Mason, Ohio; daughters, Susie Ginn of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Cheri Adkins of Lexington; a stepson, Jimmy Porter of Walton; stepdaughters, Laura Jones of Florida and Lee Ann Biddle of Demossville; a half-brother, Freddie Tutt of Arizona; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Avenue Baptist Tabernacle. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.
