Mary Utz, deacon at Bullittsville Christian Church
Mary E. Utz spent her 84 years catering to her hometown of Hebron.
As a deacon and elder at Bullittsville Christian Church, she visited the sick, started prayer chains and taught Sunday school. A retired school cafeteria worker with more than three decades of service, she fed most of the children in her community.
"She had a life of service, really," her only child, Mary Lou Garnett of Burlington, said.
Mrs. Utz died Friday at her home in Hebron.
Mrs. Utz worked in the cafeteria of the former Hebron School when her only daughter went there and later at Conner Middle School, when her three grandchildren attended.
The kids at Conner called her and her late husband "Ma" and "Pa" after hearing their grandchildren call them that, Mrs. Garnett said.
"They were grandparents to all the kids at the school," she said.
Mrs. Utz' husband, Harold E. Utz was a carpenter and janitor at a local church. He died in 1994.
Mrs. Utz was a loyal church-goer who never missed a Sunday even when advancing age started to slow her down, Mrs. Garnett said.
"She had to give up a lot of things, but she wouldn't give up her church," she said. "That was her thing - she liked to go to church."
Mrs. Utz was a life-long resident of Hebron. After retiring, she stayed active in her church and spent her time calling on her friends and people who were sick, Mrs. Garnett said.
"She had a lot of friends and was just a nice lady," Mrs. Garnett said. "She was always just kind and helpful to people."
