Lucile Brakefield, drug store owner

Anyone who patronized Brakefield's Drug Store in Walton, and that may have been about everyone in town, would likely remember seeing Lucile V. Metcalfe Brakefield there.

She and her husband operated the drug store, previously known as Jones' Drug Store, on the Main street of Walton for several decades.

"She worked about 20 hours a day, seven days a week, right by his side," Mrs. Brakefield's daughter, Barbara Fay Daugherty. "It was just an old-time store," Mrs. Daugherty said.

"They had a wooden phone booth with a crank telephone," she said, relating how travelers especially were fascinated by the surroundings and the old phone.

Mrs. Brakefield, 91, of Walton, died Sunday morning in St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

"She was a delight to be around and a very witty person with a sense of humor," said long- time Walton resident Jack Rouse.

"They worked long hours, and Mrs. Brakefield had to sew, cook and run a household for her husband and two children as well."

Mrs. Brakefield's husband, Cameron Brakefield, had worked for the previous owner, Robert W. Jones, Mrs. Daugherty said, and as she recalls, her parents took over the store in the 1930s.

"Mr. Jones had one of the best fountains around. People would come from Cincinnati, because he made all of his own syrups. My parents kept it going until World War II when they couldn't get ice cream, and then made it into a cosmetics bar," she said.

Her parents retired about two decades ago and the drug store is now a law office, Mrs. Daugherty said.

Although her mother worked hard in the store, she still found time to be an active member in the Women's Auxiliary of the Walton United Methodist Church, and the Walton Women's Club, said Mrs. Daugherty.
