Dr. Jonathan Gay VanDermark, a pediatrician for a half century
Everywhere Dr. Jonathan Gay VanDermark went, someone recognized him.
A retired physician, he had a pediatric practice in Northern Kentucky for 50 years.
"He had so many patients, it was unbelievable," said his son, Jack VanDermark of New Bern, N.C. "There were generations - mothers whose children's children were his patients. He was a great doctor."
Dr. VanDermark, 95, of Fort Wright, died at 6:50 a.m. Monday at Highland Crossing in Fort Wright. He began his career making house calls. By the time he retired at the age of 81 he had treated more than 6,000 patients.
He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Kentucky Medical Society, and the Kentucky and National pediatrics associations. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Covington, and was active with the Cincinnati Babies Milk Fund and the Covington Optimist Club.
Dr. VanDermark was one of the first pediatricians in Northern Kentucky, Jack VanDermark said.
"Children were his whole life," the son said. "He dedicated himself to pediatrics."
Dr. VanDermark retired in 1985.
He was an avid sportsman and loved to fish and hunt. He also was a pretty good athlete, his son said.
"He was a loving husband, a great father and an outstanding doctor."
Besides his son, other survivors include his wife, Margaret Jane VanDermark; son, Thomas VanDermark of Somerset; a sister, Mary Francis Lewis of Cincinnati; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oak Hills Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Pediatrics Unit, 1 Medical Village Drive, Edgewood, Ky. 410117.

Claud Marion Clark, 93, of Park Hills, died Monday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. He was a painter and decorator with Wiedemann Brewery and a member of St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. His wife, Ann Theresa Flynn Clark, died on June 29.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Matracia of Fort Wright; one granddaughter; and two great-granddaughters.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude National Shrine, 205 W. Monroe St., P. O. Box 6262, Chicago, Ill. 60680. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Lonnie Eubanks Jr., 68, of Fort Mitchell, died at 6:55 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired self-employed painter and wallpaper hanger, a three-time past master of the Covington Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Taylor Mill Moose Lodge and a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include daughters, Tammy Stratum of Elsmere, Kelly Ellington of Sarasota, Fla., and Angela Naomi Eubanks of Fort Mitchell; a son, Lonnie Eubanks III of Lakeside Park; a brother, Robert Eubanks of Lakeside Park; a sister, Dorothy Haggard of West Covington; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Arthritis Foundation, 7811 Laurel Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45243.
Betty Kuntz Scharold, 90, of Batavia, Ohio, died Monday at Clermont Mercy Hospital, Batavia. She was a homemaker, and a member of St. Francis DeSales Church, Cincinnati, and Cottage Park Association in Newtown, Ohio. Her husband, Omer Scharold Sr., died in 1965.
Survivors include a son, Omer Scharold Jr. of Highland Heights; brothers, Earl Kuntz of Crestview, Robert Kuntz of Lebanon, Ohio, Carl Kuntz of Southgate and George Kuntz of Independence; sisters, Helen Melbourne and Katherine Richards, both of Newport, and Mary Truesdell of Melbourne, Ohio; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Stephen Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Northern Kentucky Right to Life, P. O. Box 1202, Covington, Ky. 41012; or in the form of Masses. Timothy Wayne Simons Jr., son of Tim and Leslie Simons of New Richmond, Ohio, was stillborn Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Other survivors include grandparents, Joan Board of Cold Spring, and Donna and Harry Simons of Withamsville, Ohio.
Services were Tuesday at St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, handled arrangements.
Curtis Joseph Walton, 17, of Alexandria, died Monday at University Hospital, Cincinnati, of injuries suffered in an auto accident. He was a senior at Campbell County High School, and a member of the ATA School in Fort Thomas and 4H, where he showed miniature horses. He was third-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and also was an instructor in the martial art.
Survivors include his parents, Debbie and Steve Walton of Alexandria; a sister, Jennifer Walton, at home; a grandmother, Martha Blair of Alexandria; and a great-grandmother, Ethel Stacy of Alexandria.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
Georgina Webber, 75, of Cynthiana, died at 5 a.m. today at her residence.
Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Gayle Kenton Wells, 83, of Mount Olivet, died Monday at Robertson County Health Care Center, Mount Olivet. He was a retired operator with Clopay Corp., and a member of McKendree United Methodist Church, Stonewall. His wife, Lucille Sanford Wells, preceded him in death.
Survivors include nieces Jean Sharp of Georgetown, Ohio, and Sherri Brooks of Cynthiana.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Brooksville Cemetery.
