Charles 'Chuck' Castle Jr., organized Special Olympics

Charles F. "Chuck" Castle Jr. was a man of good humor and good will who believed in helping others.

He was a strong supporter of the Special Olympics, helping to organize it and getting training partners for mentally handicapped people who wanted to compete.

"He went to all kinds of events and picnics. He even got neighbors involved," said a daughter, Karen Castle of Erlanger. "The Special Olympics impacted his life and our lives. He was extremely outgoing."

Mr. Castle, 56, of Erlanger, was dead on arrival at 10:36 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence after having a heart attack at his home.

He was the management information services director for Pomeroy Computer Resources in Hebron and was a member of the New Banklick Baptist Church Walton.

Mr. Castle was born in Ohio but settled in Northern Kentucky more than 20 years ago. He and his wife, Janice Spilker Castle, were married for nearly 29 years.

He enjoyed fishing and gardening, his daughter said.

"He always had a joke and was the center of attention, in a good way,"' Miss Castle said. "Every time he came into a room, people seemed to gravitate toward him. He was just an all-around great person."

Other survivors include daughters, Kim Castle of Venice, Calif., Cindy Castle of Bristol, England, and Elizabeth Castle of Erlanger; a son, Chip Castle of Fort Thomas; his parents, Marguerite and Charles F. Castle Sr. of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Dennis Castle of Richmond, Va.; and sisters, Brenda Castle and Cheryl Dundee, both of Richmond, Va.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the family residence, 665 Mimosa Court, Erlanger. Private burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, Mount Healthy, Ohio.

Memorials are suggested to the Point, 104 Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011; or Special Olympics of Northern Kentucky, 339 Center Park Drive, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Donald Rae Dawson, 46, of Butler, died Tuesday at his residence. He was a farmer and water hauler and a member of Christ Church at Eastside Park, Pendleton County.

Survivors include his wife, Cathy Dawson; a son, Doug Dawson of Butler; daughters, Donna Stewart and Diane Dawson, both of Butler; his father, Merril Dawson of Butler; brothers, Paul Dawson of Hebron, and Marvin Dawson and David Dawson, both of Falmouth; and sisters, Georgia Mae Grasch of Louisville, Esther McClanahan of Butler and Alice Faye King of Brooksville.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Pendleton County.

Doshie Mary Joyce, 87, of Cynthiana, died Tuesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. Her husband, Carlos Veldon Joyce, died in March.

Survivors include a daughter, Lois Evelyn Pardon of Cynthiana; a son, Donald R. Joyce of Bloomington, Ill.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Melton Funeral Home, Providence. Visitation will begin at noon Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Shady Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203. Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana, is assisting with arrangements.

Charles E. "Sonny" Kersey, 55, of Cincinnati, formerly of Ludlow, died Monday in Florence. He was a self-employed brick mason and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Kersey; sons, Charles Kersey of Ludlow and John Kersey of Cincinnati; a daughter, Kelly Hammel of Ludlow; brothers, Howard Kersey, Johnny Kersey and Dennis Kersey, all of Cincinnati, Neal Kersey of Salina, Kan., and Robert Kersey of Dayton; sisters, Mildred Boles of Ludlow, JoAnn Messer of Dayton, Billie Senters and Barbara Miniard, both of Cincinnati, Rosie Hines of Cleves, Ohio, Verna Van Fang of Covington and Tammie Poston of Jamestown; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Baltimore Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Charles "Sonny" Kersey Memorial Trust Fund, c/o Huntington Bank, 301 Elm St., Ludlow, Ky. 41016.

Ricky L. Laycock Jr., 12, of Burlington, died Friday after falling from a boat in the Kentucky River in Owen County. He was a student at Gray Middle School, Union, where he participated in track and field.

Survivors include his father, Ricky Laycock Sr. of Newport; his mother and stepfather, Tina and Terry Miller of Burlington; a sister, Brittany Laycock of Burlington; a grandfather, George Johnson of Burlington; and a grandmother, Virginia Laycock of California.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Ricky Laycock Jr. Fund, c/o Provident Bank, Lockbox Dept., P.O. Box 2386, Cincinnati, Ohio 45269.

Douglas "Fuzzy" O'Brien, 79, of Newport, died Tuesday at his residence. He was a beer distributor for Link Distributors, Newport, and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include sons, Michael O'Brien of Somerset, Patrick O'Brien, Joseph O'Brien, Dennis O'Brien and Casey O'Brien, all of Newport, and Timothy O'Brien of Tucson, Ariz.; daughters, Barbara O'Brien of Florence and Delores Weire of Dayton; stepdaughters, Carol Brefeld of Cincinnati, Susie Riddle of Indianapolis, Ruth Harthun of Newport and Barbara Brune of Jacksonville, Fla.; a stepson, Terry Harthun of Newport; a brother, Marvin O'Brien of Covington; a sister, Charlene Cromer of Silver Grove; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Evergreen cemetery Chapel, Southgate. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the cemetery chapel. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Radel Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.

David Melvin Setters, 64, of Crestwood, died Monday at his residence. He was retired from USAir, Louisville. His wife, Eileen Mary Walz Setters, died in 1995.

Survivors include daughters, Diana Roberts of Louisville and Debbie Setters of Crestwood; sons, Paul Setters of Smithfield and Danny Setters of Crestwood; a sister, Marie Hamilton of Madison, Ind., a brother, John E. Setters of Taylor Mill; and seven grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Aloysius Church, Pewee Valley. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Stoess Funeral Home, Crestwood. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Cemetery, Pewee Valley.

Betty Jean Smith, 82, of Fort Thomas, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was a retired secretary for R.L. Polk Co. and a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Fort Thomas, where she was a former choir member.

Survivors include her husband, Earl Smith of Fort Thomas.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 3 Chalfonte Place, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075; or to charity.

Bernard Franklin Stephenson, 92, of Walton, died Tuesday at his residence. He was a farmer and a member of the Good Guys Club.

Survivors include sons, Gary Stephenson and Larry Stephenson, both of Walton; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hughes Chapel Cemetery, Richwood.

Mary Mattox Strub, 83, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was a retired buyer for H&S; Pogue Co. She was a member of St. Francis Altar Society, Newport, and Brighton Center, Newport.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph Strub; daughters, Carol Donaldson of Milford, Ohio, and Janice Friedrich of Fairfield, Ohio; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Radel Funeral Home, Highland Heights. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

James E. Thompson, 56, of Newport, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was a tool and die setter for Buschman Conveyor Co. His wife, Sharyn McMillan Thompson, died in 1996.

Survivors include sons, Randy Thompson, Steve Thompson and John Thompson, all of Newport; a daughter, Laurie Thompson of Newport; his father, Robert Thompson of Cincinnati; brothers, Raymond Thompson and Jesse Proctor, both of Newport, and Charles Proctor and Jack Proctor, both of Cincinnati; sisters, Judy Roberts, Jill Thomas and Juanita Proctor, all of Newport, and Denise Thompson and Connie Thompson, both of Cincinnati; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Helen Van Lewen, 86, of Newport, died at 6:20 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Health Care Center in Cincinnati. She was a retired office manager for Richardson-Merrill.

Survivors include a sister, Mary L. Hearn of Covington.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hope, c/o Eastgate Health Care Center, 4400 Gleneste-Withamsville Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45245.

Lillie Williams, 81, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Wilder, died Monday at her residence. She was a homemaker and a member of Pasadena Community Church, St. Petersburg; and Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 337, Alexandria.

Survivors include sons, Jerry W. Williams of Wilder, Ted N. Williams of Alexandria and Bill R. Wilson IV of Silver Grove; daughters, Barbara Williams of St. Petersburg, Mary K. Williams of Wilder, Mary Ann Williams of Alexandria and Sharon K. Wilson of Silver Grove; a brother, Fred Gilkison of Summerton, S.C.; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Pasadena Community Church, St. Petersburg. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Blount, Curry and Roel Funeral Home, Woodlawn Chapel, St. Petersburg. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memory Gardens, St. Petersburg.
