Allen Chris Faulkner, 21 years in the military
Allen Chris Faulkner devoted most of his life to the U.S. armed forces.
At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Navy, then served as a paratrooper and soldier in the Army. He served the country for 21 years before retiring in the 1960s.
"Up to the day he died, he couldn't remember anything except for the Army," said his wife, Nancy J. Colville Faulkner. "That's how important it was to him."
Mr. Faulkner, of Independence, died at 11:10 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. He was 71.
Born in Cynthiana and reared in Covington, Mr. Faulkner quit his education at Holmes High School in order to join the Navy.
He lived in Germany, Korea, Japan and all over the United States while he was in the service. In between, he married
in 1950 and had eight children.
"He liked it," his wife said of his nomadic lifestyle. "But he didn't like being away from the kids when we couldn't go."
Mr. Faulkner eventually settled in Northern Kentucky to be near his parents. For a while he worked at Levi Strauss, then drove a bus for TANK for nine years.
Other survivors include his sons, Steve Faulkner and William Faulkner, both of Crittenden, and David Faulkner of Carrollton; daughters, Gail Snow of Williamstown, Nancy Lange, Sherry Flege, Rebecca Hoskins and Pamela Boles, all of Independence; brothers, Cecil Faulkner of Birmingham, Ala., Charley Faulkner of Houston and George Faulkner of Madeira, Ohio; a sister, Mary Catherine Bray of Verona; 28 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Edith Abbott, 96, of Covington, died at 11:52 p.m. Wednesday at the Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.
Arrangements are pending at Connley Bros. Funeral Home, Latonia.
John Thomas "J.T." Adams, 72, of Bedford, died at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at University Hospital in Cincinnati. He was a retired farmer and a member of Bramblett Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters, Billie Adams and Kathy Smith, both of Bedford, and Bonnie Satchwell of Warsaw; a stepson, Lester "Butch" Miller of Warsaw; sisters, Polly Jackson and Mary Williamson, both of Warsaw, and Lela "Sis" Hodgett of Sparta; half brothers, Wayne Adams of Glencoe, Ray Adams of Warsaw and Doug Adams of Kansas; a half sister, Beverly Gordy of Warsaw; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery.
Donald R. Born, 69, of Covington, died at 12:50 a.m. Wednesday at his residence. He was an instrumentation technician for General Electric and a member of Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. A daughter, Debbie Born, died in 1988.
Survivors include his wife, Annette Jones Born; sons, Randall Born of Ludlow and Michael Born of Covington; and a sister, Pat Wiedeman of Sunman, Ind.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Parish Kitchen, 141 Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011.
Archie V. Carrell, 83, of Louisville, died Tuesday at his residence. He was a retired chemist for DuPont, Louisville. He was a Catholic, a former city councilman for the City of Seneca Gardens and a member of the Boy Scouts of America.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Louise Jaggers Carrell; a son, Michael R. Carrell of Crescent Springs; daughters, Mary Anne Ryan and Susan Lee Carrell, both of Louisville; a brother, Harry Lee Carrel of Kingsport, Tenn.; a sister, Mary Louise Gronefeld of Covington; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Ratterman Funeral Home, Louisville, with a Memorial Mass at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cathedral of the Assumption, Louisville. Visitation will be from noon to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park, Louisville.

Laverne Welte Crawford, 81, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Kelly Crawford, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Sherry L. Van Veen of Irwin, Pa.; sisters, Rose Connolly of Fort Thomas, Jean Hehner of Cold Spring and Audrey Rankin of Highland Heights; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Dorothy Lucas Jones Duvall, 81, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. She was a homemaker and a clerk for Long Ridge Grocery. She was a member of Long Ridge Baptist Church. Her husband, Lawrence Elmo "Buck" Jones, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Bobby Jones of Frankfort and Billy Jones of Jonesville; a daughter, Margie Woods of Bethlehem; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two step grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street location, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Jonesville Cemetery.

Ruby Lee Davis Duvall, 84, of Wheatley, died Tuesday at Owen County Memorial Hospital in Owenton. She was a homemaker and a member of Dallasburg Baptist Church, Wheatley. Her husband, William V. Duvall, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Billy Duvall of Wheatley and David Duvall of Walton; and three grandchildren.

Caleb Michael Mann, 12 days, of Walton, died at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday at Children's Hospital in Cincinnati.
Survivors include his mother, Shadonna Mann of Walton; his father, Brandon Hyden of Centerville, Ohio; grandparents, Cheryll Cash of Florence, Kevin Mann of Crittenden, and Roy and Jackie Hyden of Florence; stepgrandparent, Shawn Cash of Florence; and great-grandparents, Ed and Loretta Barrett of Cincinnati, Hazel Mann of Crittenden and Charlie and Dorothy Roberts of Florence.

Mary E. Mulvey, 78, of Latonia, died at 8:48 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

John Derald Rich, 39, of Fort Worth, Texas, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died July 15 in Fort Worth.
Survivors include a son, Michael West of Independence; his mother, La Grande "Lee" Rich of Taylor Mill; a sister, Sandy Rich of Covington; and brothers, James Rich of Stockton, Calif., David Rich of Covington and Jerry Rich of Princeton, Texas.
