Edward H. Herbol wrapped toys, family life with love
To his family and friends, Edward H. Herbol was known as "The Toy Man."
That's because Mr. Herbol spent most of his adult life working at toy stores in Cincinnati and Covington and made sure he had a stack of toys for children to play with whenever they came to his house.
"He had a winning personality. He was very charitable," said a daughter, Joyce Rhoads of Cincinnati.
"He was very good with meeting people. When they met him, they liked him instantly."
Mr. Herbol, 87, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
He was a retired bookkeeper and financial manager for Johnny's Toys in Latonia and was a member of St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright.
His first wife, Henrietta Hackman Herbol, died in 1953. His second wife, Loretta Kreidel Herbol, died in 1997.
Mr. Herbol grew up in Newport and worked at a downtown Cincinnati toy store before landing his job at Johnny's Toys in Latonia.
Mrs. Rhoads said she recalls pleasant memories as a child whenever Christmas came around, in part because of the gifts that were always under her tree.
"I remember the dolls and other things that little girls play with," Mrs. Rhoads said.
The children of her relatives always had toys to play with when they came to her house, Mrs. Rhoads said.
"Everybody loved my dad. All of the kids in the family remembered him because he worked at the toy store and there were always toys around," Mrs. Rhoads said.
