Fort Thomas' Dr. Carl Anderson, 'consummate family practitioner'
Perhaps as much as anyone who ever practiced medicine, Dr. Carl A. Anderson fit the definition of family doctor.
For 40 years, Dr. Anderson practiced in the same Fort Thomas office.
"He was the consummate family practitioner," said Dr. Anderson's son, David C. Anderson of St. Louis. "He made house calls, and he made night calls."
Dr. Anderson, 79, of Fort Thomas, died Saturday in St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Just out of medical school, Dr. Anderson served in World War II, as a doctor assigned to the 86th Infantry"Black Hawk" Division in the Philippines, his son said. He stayed in the Army for a couple of years after the war, and then came to Fort Thomas, where he established a medical practice on North Fort Thomas Avenue, next to the present site of Fort Thomas City Hall, the younger Anderson said.
"He was known for having a fabulous bedside manner. He was very kind and very good with patients," said David Anderson.
Dr. Anderson's partners from the beginning were Dr. Edward Stratman - who was also Dr. Anderson's personal physician - and the late Dr. John Grover - names as well-known in Fort Thomas as the main streets and leading businesses, David Anderson said.
Dr. Anderson also resided in the same house, the home of his wife's family, during the 40 years of his practice and until the end of his life, his son said.
A member of the staff of St. Luke Hospital for 33 years, Dr. Anderson was also a member of the Campbell County Medical Association. He retired from his medical practice in 1987.
Dr. Anderson loved travel, and his hobbies included photography and wood-working, David Anderson said. He was especially interested in creating miniature furnishings, and was a member of the Miniature Society of Cincinnati.
Dr. Anderson also found time to work as a mentor and teaching aide at Washburn School, in the inner city of Cincinnati, his son said.
