Cesare Bernardini, was member of Newport's Committee of 500
Cesare Bernardini believed in speaking his mind and standing up for his rights - even if it meant standing up to the mob interests that controlled gambling in Newport and Campbell County in the 1960s.
Mr. Bernardini was a member of the Committee of 500, a group of ordinary citizens who took an extraordinary interest in cleaning the crime from their community. The Committee of 500 backed political candidates who cleaned up Newport and Campbell County.
"He was more aggressive than I was in many ways; he let his feelings be known," said Mr. Bernardini's older brother, Dante Bernardini of West Chester, Ohio.
"He didn't hesitate to take leadership roles when it was appropriate."

Mr. Bernardini's wife of 53 years, Gloria F. Bernardini, said her husband's involvement with the Committee of 500 extended from his work with the Ministerial Association of Campbell County.
