Cesare Bernardini, was member of Newport's Committee of 500

Cesare Bernardini believed in speaking his mind and standing up for his rights - even if it meant standing up to the mob interests that controlled gambling in Newport and Campbell County in the 1960s.

Mr. Bernardini was a member of the Committee of 500, a group of ordinary citizens who took an extraordinary interest in cleaning the crime from their community. The Committee of 500 backed political candidates who cleaned up Newport and Campbell County.

"He was more aggressive than I was in many ways; he let his feelings be known," said Mr. Bernardini's older brother, Dante Bernardini of West Chester, Ohio.

"He didn't hesitate to take leadership roles when it was appropriate."

Cesare Bernardini, 77, of Fort Thomas, died at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at home.

He was a medical science liaison with UpJohn Co. and a member and former elder, deacon and clerk of session of the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Thomas.

He was a member of the Fort Thomas Retired Men's Club and the Fort Thomas Historical League and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Bernardini's wife of 53 years, Gloria F. Bernardini, said her husband's involvement with the Committee of 500 extended from his work with the Ministerial Association of Campbell County.

"They all worked together to get the job done," Mrs. Bernardini said. "He really cared about church."

Other survivors include daughters, Betsy Kephart of Paris and Rev. Nancy Dawson of Richmond, Va.; sisters, Zenobia DuBois of Des Plaines, Ill., and Peri Schmidt of Pee Wee Valley; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 220 S. Fort Thomas Ave., Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Marilyn Meyers Bishop, 67, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include daughters, Kathie Baker of Burlington, Jacqueline Rodgers of Melbourne, Fla., and Claudia Jacobs and Cherie Hicks, both of Edgewood; a sister, Audrey Pitakos of Wilder; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.

Betty Jane Ellison, 67, of Demossville, died Wednesday of cancer at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired employee of Marathon Monitors, Cincinnati. Daughters, Cheryl May, Kathy Schumacher and Julie Stevens, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Robert Downey of Hamilton, Ohio, Charles "Lucky" May and Darryl May, both of Demossville; daughters, Linda Henderson of Demossville and Brenda Schuh of Montgomery, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Broadridge Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Memorials are suggested to charity.

Caudill Hatton, 82, of Ludlow, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Marion Hatton, died in 1993.

Survivors include sons, Roger Hatton of Burlington, Arland Hatton of Cincinnati and Arnold Hatton of Lake City, Fla.; daughters, Wavoline Gavin of Villa Hills and Glenda Ralston of Florence; sisters, Ruby Woolum of Otway, Ohio, and Oma Lorentz of Cincinnati; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church, 400 Linden Road, Ludlow, Ky. 41016; or Baptist Convalescent Center, 120 Main St., Newport, Ky. 41071.

Jeffrey Abraham Losey, 47, of Cocoa Beach, Fla., formerly of Dayton, died Tuesday at his home. He was a registered nurse in home health care, a certified gun instructor for the state of Florida and a former police officer in Campbell County.

Survivors include his parents, Fred and Wilma Losey of Cocoa Beach; and a brother, Fred Evans Losey of Campbell County.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home, Cocoa Beach. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday Burial will be in Floral Memorial Gardens, Cocoa Beach. Memorials are suggested to Leprosy Foundation, 11600 Nebel St., Rockville, Md. 20852.

William "Wimpy" McKibben, 90, of Augusta, died Wednesday at Extenda Care of Augusta. He own Augusta Electric and was a member of Augusta United Methodist Church and the Masonic Order of the church.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Fowler McKibben; and a sister, Mary Ellen Schwab of California.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Augusta. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown. Memorials are suggested to charity.

Dawson D. Stephens, 66, of Florence, died at 4:35 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired clerk and supervisor with CSX Railroad, a member of Ludlow Christian Church and a past master of Golden Rule Masonic Lodge No. 345 F&AM, Latonia. He was a member of the Northern Kentucky Fellowcraft Team and the funeral corps of the lodge. He was a Coast Guard veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Stephens; sons, Terry L. Stephens of Harrison, Ohio, and Greg Stephens of Florence; a daughter, Debbie Harmon of Erlanger; a sister, Sara Yeary of Tampa, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Connley Bros. Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Anna L. Stewart, 76, of Brooksville, died at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday at Ohio Valley Manor in Ripley, Ohio. She was a homemaker and a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness in Rush. Her husband, Eliza Kimbler, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two brothers, three sisters; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, Rush. Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville, is handling arrangements.

Avery F. "Bumper" Sutherland, 89, of Warsaw, died Thursday at Gallatin County Health Care Center in Warsaw. He was a retired farmer and a Carroll County Schools bus driver.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Mertz of Warsaw, Mattie Jernigan of Lubbock, Texas, and Dorothy Berry of Carrollton; a sister, Jennie Berry of Carrollton; 29 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Eminence Cemetery.

Mary E. "Becky" Weber, 73, of Covington, died Wednesday at Drake Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Ann Church, Covington.

Survivors include her husband, Leroy Weber; a son, Michael Weber of Villa Hills; daughters, Joy Lee Weber of Somerset, Rebecca "Peachie" Weber of West Covington and Connie Farrar of Villa Hills; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ann Church. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to The Point, 104 Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Eva Wilson, 91, of Florence, died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence. She was a member of Open Door Community Church of God, Erlanger. A daughter, Mary Jones, died in 1995.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Walton Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Open Door Community Church of God, 3528 Turkeyfoot Road, Erlanger, Ky. 41018.

Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
