George Due Sr., truck driver POW, devoted to family, church
George Joseph Due Sr. was a soft-spoken man who let his actions speak for him.
A talented baseball player during the 1930s, Mr. Due believed in serving his family, his country and his employers.
As a father, Mr. Due always tucked his children in and wished them a good night. As an Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Due was a prisoner of war in Germany for about six months before being liberated by his comrades.
And Mr. Due spent many years as a truck driver with the Bavarian Brewery and Veterans Administration Hospital in Cincinnati.
"He was very soft-spoken but had a great sense of humor," said a daughter, Nancy A. Bloemer of Fort Wright.
Mr. Due, 82, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center, Fort Wright. He was a trustee of St. John Church in Covington.
Mr. Due was born and raised in Covington. One of his sons, Martin G. Due of Elk Grove, Calif., was part of a reform-minded city commission that helped change Newport during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Mrs. Bloemer said her father enjoyed singing big-band songs and sounded a great deal like Bing Crosby. "Most of his friends called him 'Bing' rather than George," Mrs. Bloemer said.
Mr. Due and his wife, Estelle Ketteler Due, celebrated their 60th anniversary last Tuesday.
"He was determined to make to it to his anniversary," Mrs. Bloemer said.
