Clyde Ballinger, 'lion' with heart
On the outside, Clyde Ballinger seemed to be as tough as the iron railroad cars that he directed for the B & O Railroad in Cincinnati.
But on the inside, Mr. Ballinger, a veteran of 35 years as a yard master, enjoyed being with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
"He was like a lion, but he was really a sheep," said a son, Carl Ballinger of Nashville, Tenn.
A daughter, Sherry Rehkamp of Independence, agreed.
"He was very outspoken. He would tell you the way it is," said Mrs. Rehkamp. "But he loved his grandkids and his great-grandkids like you wouldn't believe. He just melted when they were around. There were his pride and joy."

Mr. Ballinger tried to maintain a tough exterior, but he became more jovial in recent years, his children said.
After his wife died last year, Mr. Ballinger insisted on living at home.
He didn't want to move to a nursing home or hospital, and he managed to take good care of himself, his children said.
"He was really soft-hearted," Carl Ballinger said. "He enjoyed fishing and would go up to Lake Erie sometimes."
