Elva Holmes, nurse at St. Luke
Elva Ruth Browning Holmes was just 15 when she married
Donald Holmes.
Thus began a 64-year partnership that resulted in two children, eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Holmes and his bride-to-be grew up together in Pendleton County. Their marriage endured for all those years because they were patient with each other, he said.
And Mrs. Holmes, a retired nurse at St. Luke Hospital, enjoyed helping people, her husband said.
"She was just a real good friend. She was just good-natured," Mr. Holmes said. "She was a good cook and a good housekeeper, and she didn't smoke or drink."
Mrs. Holmes, 79, of Falmouth, died Sunday at River Valley Nursing Home in Butler. She was a nurse with St. Luke Hospital, Harrison Memorial Hospital, Pendleton County Hospital and Grants Lake Nursing Home.
Mr. Holmes said his wife wasn't afraid to speak her mind. "She would tell you what she thought," he said.
Mrs. Holmes was a member of Antioch Mills Christian Church in Falmouth, the Pendleton County and Mount Vernon homemakers clubs, and Daughters of the American Revolution Council No. 46 in Falmouth. She was a member of the National Foundation, Kentucky State Association and Covington District 3 Unit No. 1 of licensed practical nurses groups.
Other survivors include a son, Ernest Lee Holmes of Falmouth; a daughter, Charlotte Ann Whaley of Berry; a brother, Donald Browning of Falmouth; a sister, Virgie Ramsey of Falmouth; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Survivors will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.

Amelia L. Brickler, 86, of Cold Spring, died at 11:35 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired cook with Cold Spring Elementary School and a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Cold Spring. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Campbell County VFW Post No. 3205 in Alexandria and Alexandria Super Seniors.
Survivors include sons, David Brickler and Alfred Brickler, both of Cold Spring, and Gordon Brickler of Mays Lick; a daughter, Sandra Nelson of Gibsonville, N.C.; brothers, Theodore Miller of Cold Spring and Henry Miller of Alexandria; sisters, Norma Miller of Highland Heights, Loretta Ritter of Cold Spring and Freda James of Cincinnati; and 10 grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Luke Lutheran Church, 3917 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076.
Mary Anna Stayer Walker Brockmeier, 82, of Walton, died at 8:30 a.m. Monday at her home. She was a retired cook with the Gospel Light Nursing Home in Kingston, Ohio. Her first husband, Wallace Walker, died in 1976. Her second husband, Frank Brockmeier, died in 1991.
Survivors include sons, Peter Walker of Pataskala, Ohio, Joseph Walker of Sabina, Ohio, and Lloyd Walker of Greenfield, Ohio; daughters, Anna Malott of Walton, Jeanette Pegel of Jacksonville, Fla., Pauline Koppang of Albuquerque, N.M., and Lillian Walker of Chillicothe, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hughes Chapel Cemetery, Union. Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
Larry Thomas Clark, 52, of Elizabethtown, formerly of Highland Heights, died Friday at Harden Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown. He was an inspector with the U.S. Department of Defense at Fort Knox, an Army veteran and an Army reservist. His wife, Mary Anne Fry Clark, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, Larry Clark II of Elizabethtown; a daughter, Tonya Embrey of Knoxville, Tenn.; his mother, Mary Helen Clark of Wytheville, Va.; brothers, Preston Clark of Princeton, W.Va., and Wendell Clark of Wytheville; sisters, Willow Dean Gilbert of Wytheville and Tonia Turner of Max Meadows, Ca.; and one granddaughter.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.
Madeline Rose Corbett, 77, of Ludlow, died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow, and was formerly active in the Cub Scouts in Ludlow. Two sons, James Corbett and Joseph Corbett, died in 1963.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Corbett; sons, Robert J. Corbett of Villa Hills and Edward Corbett of Berea; a daughter, Rose Hall of Ludlow; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sts. Boniface and James Church. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Evea T. Edwards, 85, of Edgewood, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown. She was a homemaker, a member of Marcus Crooked Creek Baptist Church in Berry and Williamstown Order of the Easter Star Chapter No. 301. Her husband, Howard Edwards, died in 1985.
Survivors include a brother, Archie Thompson of Berry.

Louis Michael Henderson, 55, of DeLand, Fla., formerly of Morning View, died Sunday at Memorial Hospital West Volusia in DeLand.

Roger McHugh, 76, of Park Hills, died at 2:20 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was the retired owner of the former Covington Awning and Roofing Co. and a past president of the Buckeye Club in Cincinnati and the Northern Kentucky Jaycees. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and American Legion Post No. 606, Fort Louden, Pa. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Bird McHugh; sons, Roger Bird McHugh of Florence and Daniel H. McHugh of Lexington; daughters, Patricia L. Herrmann of Willow Hill, Pa., and Hilary R. Gasdorf of Park Hills; a sister, Jane McHugh of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday Connley Bros. Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. A reception will follow services at the Villa Hills Civic Club. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to charity.
Carolyn Sue Raisor, 41, of Newport, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She collapsed earlier in the day during a football game at Simon Kenton Stadium. She was a tax examiner with the Internal Revenue Service.
Survivors include daughters, Leslie Raisor of Bromley and Valarie Raisor of Newport; sisters, Darlene Posey of Newport, Maxine Mills of Florence and Lonzie Rye of Oxen Hill, Md.; a brother, Rick Mills of Erlanger; her fiance, Ron Ripberger of Newport; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Roberta Spegal Steinhauser, 81, of Morning View, died at 9:20 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired teacher, having taught at Piner School for 30 years and Portland School in Pendleton County for six years. She was a member of Wilmington Baptist Church, Fiskburg. Her husband, Eldred "Wimp" Steinhauser, died in 1969.
Survivors include a son, Sam Steinhauser of Morning View; a brother, J. B. Spegal of Demossville; and sisters, Dr. Doris Spegal and Ora Cleveland, both of Demossville, and Naomi Cummins of Crittenden.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wilmington Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in Wilmington Baptist Cemetery, Fiskburg.

George E. Wolfe, 61, of Columbia, Md., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Friday in Columbia. He was an operating engineer with Carlisle Construction Co. and a member of Ohio Operating Engineers.
Survivors include sons, George Edward Wolfe Jr. of Cincinnati and James Anthony Wolfe of Columbia, Md.; sisters, Mildred Henderson of Verona, Gladys Stephens of Bethel, Ohio, and Debra Stephens of Williamstown; brothers, Donald Wolfe of Independence and David Wolfe of Morning View; and two grandchildren.
