Fred J. Kallmeyer's legacy lives on in houses he built
Retired postal worker Fred J. Kallmeyer has a proud legacy in the homes he built for relatives and associates in Northern Kentucky.
His daughter, Betty Breetz, and his son, Tom Kallmeyer, each live in one of them in Villa Hills. It's like living in the warm, protective embrace of their father.
That's because no matter how impressive a mark Mr. Kallmeyer left on the landscape, he made a deeper and more lasting impression on the hearts of his family.
"He loved his family very, very much," said Mrs. Breetz. "He had 13 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren, and he really enjoyed them all."
Mr. Kallmeyer, of Villa Hills, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 97.
Mr. Kallmeyer was born in Covington.
For 35 years he was a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office, first at Covington branch and then at the Ludlow branch. In Ludlow, he had a rural route that included Hebron and what would become Villa Hills.
At the same time he was delivering letters, Mr. Kallmeyer was building houses.
"That was his love, his creative outlet," said Mrs. Breetz.
Mr. Kallmeyer's wife of 64 years, Margaret Eason Kallmeyer, died in 1994.
