John S. Posgay, machinist, UC professor for 20 years
John S. Posgay was a machinist who taught design, art, and architecture students at the University of Cincinnati for 20 years.
Mr. Posgay, 81, of Newport, died at 5:58 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
Mr. Posgay helped run the shop where UC students would build their class projects.
"He was a great teacher," said his son, Jack Posgay of Amelia, Ohio.
"He didn't just tell you what to do; he told you why. He explained how things work in a way that you could understand."
Mr. Posgay taught students how to use modern machinery, but he also taught them metal- forging, using the Old World blacksmithing skills that he learned from his father, who came to this country from Europe.
Mr. Posgay's son, Jack, continued the family line as a mechanic.
"My father is the reason I do what I do," he said.
As a boy, Jack would sit at his father's side in the home shop and learn about engines and tools. And he'd learn about the world.
"My father had an appreciation for the beauty in the world around you," his son said.
He instilled in his children and his students a thirst to understand the workings of the world, from the movement of the clouds to the effects of sunlight on a fishing stream, his son said.
"My father played the guitar and the banjo," said Jack Posgay. "His father not only played music, he used to make violins and guitars."
As a young man, John Posgay played music at a small radio station in Pennsylvania, where he grew up. He served in the Army in World War II.
After he returned home, he and his wife moved to Northern Kentucky to be near her sister and brother-in-law, who was recuperating from war wounds at the Veterans Hospital in Fort Thomas.
The Posgays lived in Newport, where they were members of St. Francis DeSales Church. Mr. Posgay was an auto mechanic before becoming a lab instructor at UC in the late 1960s. He retired in 1988.
In his retirement, he continued to work in his home shop, where he had wood and metal lathes. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed fishing.
