Arthur Kremer, owned excavating firm

Arthur H. Kremer never imagined the experience he gained using heavy machinery in the Army would help him be so successful later.

But from the moment he founded Kremer Excavating Co. in 1947, he was in constant demand. He dug basements for homes all over Northern Kentucky basically single-handedly until his son joined him in the 1970s.

"Building was booming, and he stayed very busy," said his daughter, Kathy DeZarn of Covington. "Whenever the weather was good, he was working."

Mr. Kremer, of Villa Hills, died at 11:50 a.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center in Fort Wright of complications from a stroke. He was 83. He grew up in Crescent Springs, and worked on the family farm until he went into the Army during World War II.

When he returned, he decided the farm could only support one family - his brother's. So, he bought machinery to do excavation work, and taught himself how to use it by digging a pond on the farm and grading the land.

Many of the region's major home builders later used Mr. Kremer for excavation jobs.

In 1949, he married his wife, Marge Domaschko Kremer, and helped raise seven children in a home close to his childhood residence.

"He was always there when you needed him, always there for advice," his daughter said. "He was very handy at home maintenance and was just big on moral values and being responsible."

Mr. Kremer retired in 1981, and his son, Ken Kremer of Villa Hills, runs the business.

In retirement, Mr. Kremer enjoyed traveling, gardening, golf and woodworking. He especially loved tending his rose garden, his daughter said.

Mr. Kremer was a life-long member of St. Joseph Church in Crescent Springs, and also was involved with the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Northern Kentucky Homebuilders Association.

"He was just a simple man - he didn't do anything too extravagant with his life - but he made a huge impact on us," said his daughter.
