Dorothy Clark, shared energy, skill and wisdom
Dorothy T. Clark pursued every phase of her life with energy and pride.
As a young mother, she sewed her children's clothes.
Christmas gifts were her handiwork - needlepoint, tole painting, hand-woven baskets.
She taught Sunday school and became a sounding board for high school students who would gather at her Carroll County home for heartfelt discussions on everything from life and love to God and family.
When her children went off to college, she became secretary for the Carroll County Cooperative Extension Service in 1969 and stayed 18 years, becoming a mentor for young extension agents and other working women.
She was president of Carrollton's Business and Professional Women's Club.
She taught Sunday school at Cove Hill Baptist Church and was a past director and treasurer of the Whites Run Baptist Association Women's Missionary Union.
"She was warm and caring and honest," said her daughter, Pat Taphorn of Villa Hills.
"Other people always came first with her. She was a very good listener, and she never tried to tell you what you should do. She would steer you in the right direction."
Mrs. Clark met her husband, Richard, while in high school.
He was a farmer and also worked for the Ameri can Can Co.
Mrs. Clark attended business college and put her office skills to work at her church, and later at the extension office.
The young family moved to a farm in Campbellsburg, outside of Carrollton, and Mrs. Clark fell in love with farm life and country gardens.
"After they retired, she wouldn't move back to the city," Mrs. Taphorn said.
When she started battling cancer several years ago, she focused on others rather than herself. "When the minister would visit her, he'd ask how she was doing. She always said 'I'm doing pretty well. But I heard so-and-so was sick. How are they. Do they need anything?" Mrs. Taphorn recalled.
"She was a lady in all things. Even when she was hurting."
