Donald 'Dutch' Wilmhoff, educator
Donald "Dutch" E. Wilmhoff of Erlanger enjoyed the students he coached and taught.
But after Mr. Wilmhoff retired as director of pupil personnel for the Erlanger-Elsmere Board of Education, he got to spend more time doting on his favorite young people: his grandchildren.
"He loved to do and spend time with the grandchildren," said Angela Wilmhoff, who was married
to him for nearly 51 years.
Mr. Wilmhoff died Friday in Seattle at the age of 73.
Mr. Wilmhoff was born in Covington and lived most of his life in Erlanger.
He was coaching basketball at St. Henry High School in Elsmere when he decided to pursue a college degree so he could teach. He earned bachelor's degrees in history and physical education at the University of Kentucky.
He went on later to earn a master's degree - and take postgraduate classes - at Xavier University in Cincinnati.
His first teaching job was in a junior high school in Hamilton, Ohio. Mr. Wilmhoff then took a job at Lloyd High School in Erlanger, where he coached basketball and taught history and biology. He was promoted to the administration before retiring six years ago.
Mr. Wilmhoff was an avid UK basketball fan and attended every state high school basketball tournament except one from the age of 16.
His dedication won him places in the Northern Kentucky University Hall of Fame and the Lloyd High School Hall of Fame.
