Stephanie Ann Bahr
Independence gymnast, cheerleader Stephanie Ann Bahr, 8, dies in pool
Eight-year-old Stephanie Ann Bahr of Independence accomplished a lot during her short life.
But the school awards, gymnastics trophies and cheerleading outfit she left behind are cold comfort to her family and friends.
They are reeling from her drowning death Tuesday in a hotel swimming pool during a family vacation to Sanibel Island, Fla.
The people who love Stephanie measured her worth on her personality and strong Christian faith.
"She was a little girl that just lit up the room," said her father, Steven Bahr.
"She was always smiling. Always happy. Everybody liked Stephanie."
"She wanted to go to the Olympics and she wanted to be a doctor," he said. "She always said she wanted to have five kids."
Stephanie would have been a third-grader at Community Christian Academy in Independence.
She attended Community Pentecostal Church in Independence, where she was active in a youth Bible study and activities club called the Missionettes.
From the age of 4, Stephanie was a cheerleader.
She cheered for the Beechgrove Boosters and the South Kenton Lions, a team in the Northern Kentucky Youth Football League.
Last October, her cheerleading squad took first place at a state competition in Louisville.
Stephanie was a member of the Fit Stop Gymnastics team in Erlanger and competed in the vault, the parallel bars and the balance beam.
Last May she won a gold medal for her floor routine, beating out girls from Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana.
Steven Bahr said Stephanie was only 6 when she taught herself to do a backhand spring.
"While the other kids would ride their bikes and play, she stayed in the back yard and practiced," her father said.
"She was just so determined."
