William Hinds, helped plan Dayton Class of '40 reunions
William Hinds appreciated the old and the new.
Mr. Hinds, of Dayton, loved to catch up with fellow graduates of Dayton High School's Class of 1940, and he served on a committee that regularly arranged reunions. The most recent of these reunions was in 1995.
The 77-year-old Mr. Hinds turned to modern technology - computerized golf games - when he wasn't feeling strong enough to tee off on a golf course.
Mr. Hinds had a great attitude about life, said his daughter, Merry C. Hinds of Fort Thomas.
"He liked to joke around," she said. "He liked puns and he was quick-witted."
Mr. Hinds died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
He was a native of Dayton and worked at the Wadsworth Watch Case Co.
Mr. Hinds was a supervisor there when a drill-press operator named Pearl Thomas caught his eye. They celebrated 56 years of marriage in April.
Mr. Hinds worked at a division of National Lead in Ohio. He then took a job in Newport with the W. J. Baker Co., which stamps metal products.
Mr. Hinds retired in 1987 as a purchasing agent.
Until recently, Mr. Hinds and his wife Pearl would walk about two miles each day at the reservoir in Fort Thomas with their dog Mandy.
Mr. Hinds also was a member of the Henry Barnes Masonic Lodge in Dayton.
Other survivors include a son, William F. Hinds of Anderson Township, Ohio; a sister, Norma Hicks of Latonia; brothers, Claude E. Hinds of Fairfield, Ohio, and Harry Hinds Jr. of Estill Springs, Tenn.; and a sister, Bonnie McClanahan of Latonia.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at A. C. Dobbling & Son Funeral Home, Bellevue.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m.
Burial will be in Gate of Heaven cemetery in Cincinnati.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Alice Kathryn Blackburn, 85, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday at Mercy St. Theresa Center, Cincinnati.
She was a homemaker and a member of Hilltop Church of Christ, Taylor Mill.
Her husband, Roy Jennings Blackborn, died in 1983.
Survivors include a son, Roy Franklin Blackburn of Milford, Ohio; a daughter, Rita Pipes of Louisville; sisters, Helen Pavey of Alexandria and Verna Ruth Adams of Erlanger; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin at noon Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Falmouth.

J. Harold Connley Sr., 88, of Latonia, died at 6:30 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice, Covington.
Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.
Ann Scott Giles, 85, of Hershey, Pa., formerly of Cynthiana and Lexington, died Tuesday at Hershey Medical Center in Hershey.
She received a master's degree in home economics from the University of Kentucky and retired after 40 years as a teacher at Dixie Heights High School, Edgewood. She was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Lexington and Kentucky Teachers Retirement Association.
Survivors include sisters, Neva Giles Gottlieb and Nelva Giles Crum, both of Hershey.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Lexington Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Lexington.

Donald Lovelace, 62, of Huntington Beach, Calif., formerly of Newport, died Sunday in Corona, Calif.
He was a graphic artist with Rockwell International.
Survivors include daughters, Rebecca Plummer and Cindy Monroy, both of southern California; a son, Kenneth Lovelace of southern California; a sister, Mary Alice Porter of Oregon; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at the convenience of the family.
Frances Louise Rogers, 79, of Owenton, died Friday at Owen County Memorial Hospital, Owenton.
She was a member of Monterey Baptist Church, Monterey.
There are no immediate survivors.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Monterey Masonic Cemetery, Monterey.

Harry W. Shrewsbury Jr., 48, of Alexandria, died Friday at 12:05 p.m. at the St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.
He was an employee of St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, where he worked in scheduling in the operating room.
He is survived by his former wife, Kathy Shrewsbury of Cincinnati; his mother, Wanda E. Shrewsbury of Alexandria; and a sister, Deborah Nienaber of Scarborough, Maine.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Alexandria Funeral Home, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Taylor Mill.
