Erlanger's William Gentry, loving dad, softball coach
William J. Gentry believed that life is too short not to enjoy every minute of it.
The Erlanger man lived his own life to the fullest before succumbing to cancer at 46.
"His big thing was he just wanted everybody to be happy and get along," said his wife, Laura Nortrand Gentry.
"He just wanted everybody to forget their differences. He told me many a time that life's too short not to enjoy it and get the most out of it."
Mr. Gentry died at 12:35 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood after a two-year battle with cancer.
He worked for 16 years as a maintenance technician for the Erlanger-Elsmere School Board, serving as an electrician, plumber and inspector at the various schools.
He also was a long-time volunteer for the Erlanger Fire Department.
His coworkers, like his family and friends, loved him for his dedication, compassion and outgoing personality.
"He was loved by the entire school system," his wife said. "He was just very sensitive, very giving and fun-loving. He would help anybody."
Mr. Gentry grew up in Ludlow and went to Ludlow High School. He played softball and football for league teams. Also a talented musician, he played trumpet in the school band, and he sang in the chorus of Ludlow Baptist Church.
After graduating from high school in 1971, Mr. Gentry married
Sandra Morgan, in 1972. They had two daughters.
In 1985 he married
again, and he and his second wife, Nortrand Gentry, had a daughter.
For 11 years beginning in 1988, he served as an assistant coach for the Lloyd High School girls' softball team, on which his two oldest daughters played. He also headed summer recreation programs for softball players.
Mr. Gentry was himself a talented softball player, playing five to seven nights a week for many years. In 1987, his team, sponsored by Round Paper Packaging (RPP), qualified for a world softball tournament in Minnesota. His favorite positions were shortstop and pitcher.
Mr. Gentry was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus in 1997. It eventually spread to his spine. He fought bravely, his wife said, and continued to work until the end.
"He fought, and he fought, and he beat the odds," Mrs. Gentry said.
